Now a food firm run by Prince Charles is replacing its plastic punnets with packs made from tomato leaves.

The trays are being used in trials by Waitrose for tomatoes sold under the Duchy Organic label.

The leaves would normally be composted when the crop is over, but once mixed with recycled cardboard pulp, they have a new lease of life.

If a trial is successful, they will be used in other branches next year and could save 3.5million plastic trays a year. 

A Waitrose spokesman said: ‘We’re determined to reduce our use of plastic across our business.’
