Queensland farmer claims her bank manager said he would ‘commit suicide’ in her position

A farmer has revealed the shocking response her bank manager told her when asking for advice on her mortgage.

Debbie Viney’s Queensland farm was suffering from Australia’s worst drought in 100 years and met Rabobank executive Peter Stevens six years ago, where he told her he could give her a cheaper mortgage than the one she had, A Current Affair reported.

Ms Viney was able to initially borrow $100,000 from the bank to sell of some stock, but was told by Mr Stevens to stop selling her stock for less than bank valuation or she would end up in receivership.

Mr Stevens visited the farm and Ms Viney recorded the conversation saying he would ‘commit suicide’ if he took over her Longreach area property, the publication reported.

In addition to Ms Viney’s claims, former owners of Mount Morris Station in Queensland, Cate Stuart, also claimed Rabobank had bullied them off their farm.

The Stuart family decided it would be too expensive to transport their property and herd and would buy another one at their new property.

Ms Stuart said the bank agreed to the idea, but just 10 days after their herd was sold, the bank changed their mind.

They refused to let the family re-draw on their finances to buy any more, and their account was frozen and, unable to operate, they were forced to default, causing them to be evicted off their property in 2014, A Current Affair reported.

Rabobank is fully cooperating with the Royal Commission.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Rabobank for comment.
