Real Madrid 1-0 Gremio: SIX THINGS YOU MISSED

Real Madrid eased to their third Club World Cup victory with a slender 1-0 victory against Gremio in the final.

Here, Sportsmail brings you a roundup of all the things you may have missed from the clash at the Mohammed Bin Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

Fans fighting

Opposing fans were found to be fighting in the stands in the run-up to the Club World Cup final.

The images reveal both sets of fans exchanging blows and scuffling, with one Real Madrid fan ending up worse for wear after it appeared a Gremio fan had punched him in the face.

Same team as Champions League final

Real Madrid began the Club World Cup final with the exact starting XI that got them there.

Zinedine Zidane named the same 11 players that he did against Atletico Madrid in May’s Champions League final, suggesting this trophy is not one Real Madrid take lightly.

Those players are: Keylor Navas, Dani Carvajal, Raphael Varane, Sergio Ramos, Marcelo, Luka Modric, Casemiro, Toni Kroos, Isco, Karim Benzema, Cristiano Ronaldo.

Gremio coach thinks he’s better than Ronaldo

Gremio head coach Renato Gaucho boldly claimed he was a better player than Cristiano Ronaldo in the build-up to this clash.

Gaucho, better known as Renato Portaluppi or simply ‘Renato’, was capped 41 times by Brazil and enjoyed in a 19-year playing career in Brazil, currently enjoying his third stint as manager of 2017 Copa Libertadores champions, Gremio.

Despite a decent career, Renato Gaucho’s comments appear more rooted in mind games than actual fact, as five-time Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldo probably has holds more records and has won more accolades than Gaucho has international caps (41).

Level with Barcelona, three ahead of AC Milan

Real Madrid’s triumph means they draw level with Barcelona for the most victories in the Club World Cup, as both Spanish giants now boast three victories each in this competition.

Barcelona took home the trophy in 2009, 2011 and 2015 with Los Blancos victorious in 2014, 2016 and 2017.

Club World Cup branding aside, Real Madrid are also the world’s most decorated club when it comes to winning world club titles. Victory against Gremio gives Zidane’s men their sixth triumph, following wins in 1960, 1998, 2002, 2014 and 2016, two more than second placed AC Milan.

Ronaldo finds another way to outscore teams

Cristiano Ronaldo entered the tournament tied as the joint-record goalscorer on five goals. His company? Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez.

All it took was two strikes, one against Al Jazira and another in the final, for Ronaldo to introduce some breathing space between himself and the chasing pack. He has now has seven goals, two more than Messi and Suarez and more goals than every side in the tournament’s history apart from Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester United.

For good measure, the following Champions League winners have all scored fewer than the 2017 Ballon d’Or winner: Inter Milan (6), Bayern Munich (5), AC Milan (5), Chelsea (3) and Liverpool (3).

Real Madrid get one over Barcelona again

Ronaldo’s goal provides Real Madrid with yet another opportunity to get one over Barcelona. The two La Liga giants were tied on 23 goals each in the history of the tournament, until the former Man United star scored to give Los Blancos the edge, his first goal from a direct free-kick since January 2017.

Real Madrid now hold the record in the Club World Cup for: most world club titles, most team goals, top goalscorer and most titles.
