Real Madrid’s UK record ahead of Wembley debut

REAL IN THE UK

Played: 20

Won: 9

Drawn: 4

Lost: 7

Goals scored/conceded: 31/28

Real Madrid will make their Wembley bow when they take on Tottenham in the Champions League, with England’s national stadium becoming the 15th UK venue to play host to the famous Spanish club.

From the most iconic grounds in the country, such as Old Trafford and Anfield, to lost stadia such as the Baseball Ground right through to more obscure locations including Kilmarnock’s Rugby Park, Real have played on these shores 20 times in their history.

And their results have been mixed over the years.

OLD TRAFFORD

1957 – European Cup semi-final: United 2 Real 2

Madrid had won the first leg of this last-four clash 3-1 in the Bernabeu and quickly took a dominant position in the tie by scoring twice in the first half through Raymond Kopa and Hector Rial.

United rallied after the break but goals from Tommy Taylor and Bobby Charlton were nowhere near enough to haul the hosts back into the match.

1968 – European Cup semi-final: United 1 Real 0

The first leg of the blockbuster semi was sealed by George Best’s 35th-minute strike. United took their slender lead to the Bernabeu for the second leg and then produced a sensational comeback, from 3-1 down on the night with 17 minutes remaining, to book their place in the final.

Victory over Benfica at Wembley followed.

2000 – Champions League quarter-final: United 2 Real 3

United had earned a very creditable first-leg goalless draw in Spain but any optimism and hopes of qualification for the last four were quickly dashed as Madrid raced out of the traps.

Roy Keane’s own goal and a Raul brace had the visitors in total command and, though David Beckham and Paul Scholes put a gloss of respectability on the scoreline, the hosts were well and truly outgunned.

2003 – Champions League quarter-final: United 4 Real 3

Trailing 3-0 from the first leg, Sir Alex Ferguson’s side had it all to do. And having conceded three more goals by the hour mark progression was a virtual impossibility.

Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring in the 12th minute and but Ruud van Nistelrooy equalised. Ronaldo restored Real’s lead, only for Ivan Helguera to put through his own net. Again, Ronaldo struck, completing his hat-trick, and though there was a late United rally – with Beckham notching twice – Real were safely through.

2013 – Champions League Round of 16: United 1 Real 2

The tie was locked at 1-1 after the first leg and United edged in front when Sergio Ramos scored an own goal just after half-time.

Once Nani was sent off, however, Real capitalised and edged out their hosts thanks to Luka Modric and Ronaldo, who scored within three second-half minutes of each other.

PORTMAN ROAD

1973 – UEFA Cup 1st round: Ipswich 1 Real 0

The own goal glitch struck again as Madrid suffered a first-round, first-leg defeat at Portman Road. Full back Benito Rubinan was the guilty party on this occasion, putting through his own net in the 52nd minute of the game.

The Tractor Boys completed a famous win over their illustrious opponents by stealing a goalless draw in Spain in the second leg.

BASEBALL GROUND

1975 – European Cup 2nd round: Derby 4 Real 1

The night Charlie George tamed Real Madrid. The striker’s hat-trick helped the Rams to a famous win. George netted in the ninth minute and followed up with penalties on the quarter-hour and with 12 minutes remaining.

David Nish was also among the goals for Derby, while Jose Pirri scored for Real. Sadly for the English side, they were beaten 5-1 in the second leg and eliminated.

WHITE HART LANE

1985 – UEFA Cup quarter-final: Spurs 0 Real 1

Madrid were underdogs for this one but ended up victorious. Steve Perryman’s 15-minute own goal was enough to win the game on the night and the tie overall, thanks to a goalless second leg in the Bernabeu.

Real went on to win the UEFA Cup that year.

2011 – Champions League quarter-final: Spurs 0 Real 1

A terrible error from goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes, who spilled Ronaldo’s shot into the back of the Spurs net, settled the game on the night but the tie was in reality already over after Real’s 4-0 demolition of Tottenham at the Bernabeu in the first leg.

ELLAND ROAD

2000 – Champions League group stage: Leeds 0 Real 2

Leeds held their own for almost 70 minutes of this group-stage encounter in the Spanish capital, with a team featuring Dominic Matteo and Jacob Burns keeping the Galacticos of Luis Figo, Raul and Roberto Carlos at bay.

Then Fernando Hierro broke the deadlock and Raul netted two minutes later.

End of contest. Leeds did make it out of their group, however, and got all the way to the semi-finals before being beaten by Valencia.

HIGHBURY

2006 – Champions League Round of 16: Arsenal 0 Real 0

Having won in the Bernabeu thanks to Thierry Henry’s goal, Arsenal defended for their lives in the return fixture in London and did so successfully.

Both Jose Antonio Reyes and Raul struck the frame of the goal as Madrid pushed for an equaliser in vain.

ANFIELD

2009 – Champions League Round of 16: Liverpool 4 Real 0

What a night for the Anfield crowd. Fernando Torres was in irresistible form as Liverpool inflicted an absolute hammering.

The former Atletico Madrid striker got the Reds going in the 16th minute before Steven Gerrard added a second from the spot.

Ryan Babel crossed for Gerrard to slap home the third and, late in the game, Andrea Dossena even got in on the act. Added to their 1-0 first-leg win, the result saw Liverpool coast into the quarter-finals.

ETIHAD STADIUM

2012 – Champions League group stage: City 1 Real 1

Manchester City had to win this game to make it out of the group but they fell behind to Karim Benzema’s opener for Real.

Sergio Aguero did equalise from the penalty spot but Roberto Mancini’s men couldn’t find the goal they needed to give themselves the chance of qualification.

HAMPDEN PARK

1960 – European Cup final: Real 7 Eintracht Frankfurt 3

A then-record crowd for a European Cup final saw Madrid secure their fifth continental crown in style. Frankfurt took an early lead but from the moment Alfredo di Stefano equalised midway through the first half it was one-way traffic.

Di Stefano ended with a hat-trick and the great Hungarian goalscorer Ferenc Puskas helped himself to four as the Germans were swept aside.

IBROX

1963 – European Cup 1st round: Rangers 0 Real 1

Rangers held out until the 86th minute of this preliminary round first-leg encounter at Ibrox before being breached by the magnificent Puskas.

They didn’t fare so well in the return fixture in Spain, conceding to Puskas again inside three minutes and losing 6-0 to a Real side who were eventually beaten in the final by Inter Milan.

RUGBY PARK

1965 – European Cup 1st round: Kilmarnock 2 Real 2

As extraordinary night at Rugby Park saw Killie draw first blood after 20 minutes 18-year-old Tommy McLean’s penalty.

It took just five minutes for Pirri to equalise and Amancio Amaro put the visitors in front in the second half but Kilmarnock came again… and somehow managed to equalise through Brian McIlroy. Sadly for the Scots, the second leg was not quite as close, with Madrid winning 5-1.

CELTIC PARK

1980 – European Cup quarter-final: Celtic 2 Real 0

A magnificent night for Celtic, who saw off their Spanish guests thanks to second-half goals from George McCluskey and John Doyle.

The visitors featured the likes of Laurie Cunningham and Vicente del Bosque in their ranks. Unfortunately for the Bhoys, Madrid won the second leg 3-0 and progressed.

NINIAN PARK

1971 – European Cup Winners’ Cup quarter-final: Cardiff 1 Real 0

Brian Clark secured immortal status at Ninian Park by scoring the winner on the night, a 31st-minute header from Nigel Rees’s cross. The Bluebirds couldn’t make the advantage count in the second leg at the Bernabeu, however, as they slipped to a 2-0 defeat to exit the competition.

Ronaldo was the headliner again with two goals in a comprehensive victory for Real, who became the first team to retain the Champions League title. Ronaldo opened the scoring before Mario Mandzukic’s stunning overhead kick levelled the scores in Cardiff. Casemiro’s deflected shot restored Madrid’s lead, Ronaldo added a third and, after Juan Cuadrado had been sent off, Marco Asensio netted the fourth in the final minute.
