Rio Ferdinand: Alexis Sanchez should sign for Man City

Rio Ferdinand has admitted that Alexis Sanchez should sign for Manchester City rather than his former side United.

The two Manchester clubs have emerged as front-runners to sign Sanchez, whose contract with Arsenal expires in the summer.

Runaway Premier League leaders City have been on his trail since a failed bid to sign him last summer and remain keen but United lead the bidding with an offer of £25million.

Manchester City and rivals United are leading the race to sign Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez

And Ferdinand, who enjoyed a trophy-laden career at United between the years of 2002 and 2014, believes that the Chile international has more chances of winning silverware with Pep Guardiola’s side.

Ferdinand, speaking on BT Sport following Tottenham’s victory over Everton, said: ‘I am going to be honest, if he has got an option to go from Arsenal to go to Manchester City or Manchester United, as a footballer who wanted to win trophies and would judge myself based on trophies being won, at the moment Manchester City looks like the place to go for him in that respect.

‘They are top of the league, they are going to win the league this season, they are in the Champions League, they are looking like they will be in the final for the League cup, the FA Cup as well potentially. So he has got more opportunities to win trophies there.’

The former United defender and England international also believes the chance to work with Guardiola for a second time should lure Sanchez to the Etihad rather than Old Trafford.

Sanchez played under Guardiola for one season while the pair worked together at European giants Barcelona.

He added: ‘He knows Pep. If Pep wants him again now, I am sure he is thinking I am going to go there the second time round and I am going to do it properly this time.’

City, who currently sit a remarkable 15 points clear off second-placed United in the English top flight, are also just one game away from the Carabao Cup final and one of the favourites to win the Champions League this season.

And when asked whether it hurts for Ferdinand to say Sanchez should join City for footballing reasons over United, the 39-year-old jokingly replied: ‘When we get to the break, I’m going to speak to the lady and ask for some tissues. This isn’t good, this isn’t a good moment for me. This isn’t nice man.

‘It’s where it’s at, Manchester City, you have to pay the respect that they are due, they are flying.’
