Rowdy Australian Open fans get under skin of tennis star

Bosnian tennis star Damir Džumhur spat the dummy during his second round match against John Millman after the rowdy Australian Open crowd got behind their homegrown hero.

The match was only one game old when the 25-year-old lost the plot, calling on the umpire to calm the rambunctious audience.

‘Are you going to tell them to stop or not?’ Džumhur barked at the official.

Džumhur broke Millman in the first game of the match, and the game clock read just seven minutes when he lost his cool.

After faulting his first serve, a fan yelled out as the ball boy scurried off the court.

He then sent his second serve long, earning a double fault and giving his 28-year-old opponent the chance to break straight back.

Džumhur threw his arms up in the air and walked towards the umpire, pointing at a section of the crowd.

‘It was between two serves,’ the Bosnian cried as the match official explained there was nothing he could do.

Ever the provocateurs, the Australian crowd began chanting for Millman as Džumhur continued to gripe over the interruption.

The crowd became increasingly restless as the 25-year-old continued to argue his point, before he finally marched back to the baseline to continue the match.

Fans criticised Džumhur on social media, saying he needs to develop thicker skin if he were going to continue on in the tournament.

‘Džumhur already cranky about the Aussie crowd support. Gonna be a long afternoon for him if that’s bothering him,’ one person said.

‘Literal crowd war going on in Millman-Džumhur,’ another Twitter user observed.

Many noted the fact the Bosnian’s supporter section were as loud as any section in the crowd, with some describing them as ‘aggressive’ and ‘ultra-like’.

He would however go on to comfortably win the match despite the it being contentious throughout.

The 25-year-old downed his Aussie opponent in four sets to set up a potential third round match with world no.1 Rafael Nadal, who almost certainly will also hold a heavy crowd advantage.
