Royal wedding 2018: The people’s party starts TODAY!

Royal wedding street parties are well underway in Britain today, with thousands of schools hosting celebrations.

Proud parents posted pictures on social media of their children going off to school this morning dressed in patriotic outfits and royal family masks as teachers put on parties ahead of the big day tomorrow.

Local authorities across the country have received hundreds of party applications, which allow roads to be shut and streets to be decked out with bunting, to help people celebrate the Windsor Castle wedding.

Hotspots include Richmond in South West London, which is hosting 93 parties over the wedding weekend – although Scots appear less enthused occasion, with just one reported street party taking place, in Elgin, Moray.

Offices around the country and overseas are also holding parties of their own with bunting hanging from the ceiling and patriotic cakes for staff, while some schools are even holding a ‘Meghan spoon race’ for pupils.

England and Wales have a proud history of street parties, which started as ‘peace teas’ after the First World War as a treat for children in days of hardship, and have evolved into a tradition on national days of celebration.

But there are concerns that thousands of revellers celebrating the wedding at parties around London tomorrow face having their plans ruined by travel chaos as large parts of the Underground network are shut down.
