Salim Mehajer given 18-month good behaviour order for intimidating estranged wife Aysha with emails

Bankrupt former deputy mayor Salim Mehajer has been handed an 18-month good behaviour bond for intimidating his estranged wife with abusive emails and social media messages.

The controversial 31-year-old western Sydney developer had a conviction recorded against him at Burwood Local Court on Thursday.

Mehajer, who was found guilty in April of intimidation, appeared via video link before magistrate Jacqueline Trad to face justice over his treatment last year of his estranged wife Aysha Learmonth, who he married in a lavish ceremony in 2015.

His lawyer Zali Burrows argued for a light sentence, telling the court her client was a ‘sick puppy’ who was still in love with his Aysha when he sent her vile messages.

‘At the time of offence Mr Mehajer wasn’t aware of (his) mental health issues,’ Ms Burrows said.

‘There were no threats or direct harm to his wife.’

However the magistrate said he deserved a harsher punishment for intimidating his estranged wife with intimidating messages over Instagram in November last year.

‘In my view it’s a case that a conviction is not only appropriate but necessary,’ Jacqueline Trad said.

The magistrate said while there was ‘no actual threat of violence conveyed in those messages’ to his estranged wife, the content had ‘a certain amount of menace in relation to the accused being able to know what the victim was doing and when she was doing it’.

The colourful property developer and former Auburn deputy mayor was returned to custody late last week after breaching his bail conditions for separate charges.

The businessman with a penchant for German luxury cars appeared in court via video link, wearing prison greens and with a newly-shaved head.

Mehajer was released on bail in March over charges relating to an allegedly staged car crash in his Mercedes-Benz four-wheel drive, as he was facing assault charges.

However, he spent the past week back in Silverwater Remand Centre after he breached his bail conditions.
