Samsung takes on Fitbit and Apple with Gear Sport watch

In a bid to take on Apple and Fitbit, Samsung has introduced three new devices.

The firm has unveiled the Gear Sport – a fitness-focused smartwatch, Gear Fit2 Pro – an upgraded GPS sports band, and Gear IconX, a second generation of the firm’s cord-free earbuds.

Samsung unveiled the three new devices at the IFA conference in Berlin today.

The new Gear devices assist with a range of activities – from robust fitness tracking to nutrition and sleep monitoring, as well as motivational coaching as a lifestyle companion.

The first new device is the Gear Sport – a wearable with a circular face and super AMOLED 1.2-inch display.

With Gear Sport, users can work to achieve health and wellness goals, and receive nutrition management alerts and activity recommendations even when they are offline.

The device is available in a range of colours including blue, orange or black.

Gear Fit2 Pro, which has new swim and heart monitoring capabilities.

Finally, Samsung unveiled its second generation cord-fee earbuds – the IconX.

Users can listen to music through the earbuds by transferring songs from a Samsung smartphone of computer, through Bluetooth.

They also allow users to access Bixby, Samsung’s smart assistant, similar to Apple’s Siri.

The updated earbuds come in black, grey and pink and are even more lightweight than the first generation.

Fast-charging and improved battery life also allow users to listen to up to five hours of music streaming, or seven hours of standalone music playback.

DJ Koh, President of Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics, said: ‘At Samsung, we celebrate the everyday athlete – whether you’re going for a light jog, or training for your next triathlon.

Users can access a range of apps through their Gear Fit2 devices, including Spotify, and various exercise apps

‘We have a long history of embracing choice and innovation, and our wearables are designed to help consumers of varying fitness levels meet their goals and aspirations.

‘We want to help remove the stigma that fit can only mean one thing and that fitness trackers are complex and for only the most intense of workouts.

‘Our new Samsung Gear wearables help consumers ‘go beyond fitness’ and enjoy an active, balanced and fulfilled life in a smart and seamless way.’

The Gear Sport is similar to the Fitbit Blaze Fitness watch, which can also monitor the user’s heart rate, although the Fitbit does not let users access other apps through their device.

It also resembles the Apple Watch, which allows users to connect with the exercise apps.

The cord-less earbuds introduced by Samsung also very closely resemble Apple’s AirPods, although it remains to be seen how they will compare in price.

It is unclear when the devices will be available or how much they will cost.
