Sea of 361 Golden Retrievers floods Guisachan House in Tomich

Dudley Coutts Marjoribanks, known as Lord Tweedmouth, kept a stud book in which he noted that the first golden retriever was bred at Guisachan House in 1868.

It was a mix between a yellow Wavy-Coated Retriever named Nous and rare Tweed Water-Spaniel named Belle. The pair produced four puppies named Crocus, Cowslip, Ada and Primrose.

It wasn’t until 1913 when the breed was recognised by the Kennel Club. When the Golden Retriever Club was established in 1920 the official breed name was changed to the golden retriever.

Golden retrievers have traditionally worked as gun dogs, retrieving ducks and upland waterfowl during hunting and shooting trips. Their soft mouths allowed them to pick up the kills without breaking their bones.

However, the breed has in recent years become popular as a house pet. This is despite golden retrievers tendency to shed copiously during summer.
