Sevilla coach Eduardo Berizzo has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, the Spanish club confirmed on Wednesday morning.

Confirmation the 48-year-old Argentine requires treatment for a tumour came following reports he told his players the news during his half-time team talk as they trailed Liverpool 3-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

A statement released by the club read: ‘The medical services of Sevilla FC report that the coach of the first team, Eduardo Berizzo, has been diagnosed with an adenocarcinoma of the prostate.

It is understood the Argentine, who guided Celta Vigo to the semi-finals of the Europa League last season, will undergo treatment for the condition at a later date.

According to Sevillainfo, the tumour has been detected early and Berizzo has a good chance of making a full recovery.

They trailed by three goals after only half-an-hour thanks to Roberto Firmino (two) and Sadio Mane. But two strikes from Yassim Ben Yedder started the improbable fightback that Pizarro completed in the closing minutes.
