Shark Tank: Janine Allis forks out $600,000 for 40% of a chocolate company that’s ‘better than sex’

The other Sharks fled after learning 36% of the businesses profits went back to staff wages – but Janine Allis was one very happy customer.

On Tuesday’s Shark Tank, Ganache Chocolate master chocolatier Arno Backes scored $600,000 from Janine in return for 40% of his business.

The Boost Juice founder saw no other choice after sampling some of the goods and exclaiming: ‘This is amazing. That was nearly better than sex.’

Suddenly realising what she’d just said, she added: ‘Sorry… That’s right – we’re on the show!’

Janine was pleased with the product, but not at all with the operations side of the Melbourne-based company.

‘Is it fair to say that you love chocolate more than you love business?’ she asked at one point.

Despite heavily criticising Arno’s business model, expenses and business partner, Janine matched the deal he’d originally asked for.

‘The offer is $600,000 for 40%, But it has three conditions: I’ve gotta meet your [business] partner and she’s not Godzilla,’ she began.

‘The second one is you have to get your cost of goods down to 33% and the third is that the wages have to be a maximum of 30%.

‘That shouldn’t be difficult. I think that’s poor management.’

Arno didn’t mull over the offer for long: ‘Hmm, $600,000 for 40%, that’s exactly what I asked for, so, I very much agree with you!’

After he left, Janine smiled and concluded: ‘I’ve got 40 per cent of the business… I should get my money back in two years.’

Controversial ‘Shark’ Steve Baxter subsequently described her commitment as a ‘good heart [pity] decision.’

Janine hit back with: ‘No, it was a business decision. You watch, mate. You watch this space.’
