Shocking moment Toyota 4WD drives down a cycle path and almost collides with cyclist

A cyclist has had a narrow escape after he was almost struck down by a 4WD while using a bike lane during his commute home.

Gibin Kaduvannoor John was heading home from his job as a hospital clerk at Sydney’s North Shore Private Hospital when he was almost run down at the Kent Street and Liverpool Street intersection in the heart of the city.

Video taken by Mr Gibin shows him following the road rules, but as he turns the corner he is almost struck by a white 4WD illegally using the cycle lane.

He stopped his bike in time and seemed to keep his calm as the car slowed down and turned the corner, with no apology or acknowledgement from the driver.

Mr Kaduvannoor John told Daily Mail Australia that he was riding home from work when the car came out of nowhere and cut him off.

‘I was shocked to see a car driving on the bike only lane, nothing like this has happened to me before,’ he said.

‘But I have had some pretty close calls.’

However none of those close calls involved the cycle lane.

‘All the close calls happened were on the roads, but this one was on a bike only path,’ he said.

‘Separated bike paths are the place where cyclist feel more safe than on road between the cars.’

Mr Kaduvannoor John said riding through the CBD presented a number of risks but a car driving in the cycle lane was not one he had expected.

‘Pedestrians don’t actually check before crossing the bike lanes,’ he said.

‘I always take extra care when pedestrians are around, I always think the pedestrian is going to jump in front of my bike so i give enough space for me to stop if they jump without looking.’

He said that only happens inside the Sydney CBD, but he won”t let it ruin his enjoyment of riding and he felt most drivers were considerate.

‘I don’t think an incident like this can kill the joy of riding. I still commute on my bike,’ he said.

‘To be honest. Most of the drivers I have seen while commuting are very considerate of cyclists. But there will be few in there who does nasty close passes and honking.’

According Transport for NSW, the rate of cyclist deaths on NSW roads have remained steady since 1996 for an average of 11.19 per year, totaling 235 deaths.

The most recent data on CBD cycle lanes from the Transport Roads & Maritime Services shows that on any given day anywhere between 600 and 1600 cyclists use the Kent street cycle lane.
