Shutdown threatens to spoil Trump fundraiser at Mar-a-Lago

President Donald Trump has a big anniversary to celebrate tomorrow evening, assuming a government shutdown doesn’t get in the way.

Trump was supposed to mark his first full year in office with a fundraiser at his Mar-a-Lago estate. A crisis on Capitol Hill is threatening to keep him in Washington, for the weekend, though.

Asked by DailyMail.com if Trump is expected to fly to Florida tomorrow, White House Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney said, ‘No. I don’t. In fact, I think the president’s been very clear…He’s not leaving until this is finished.’

Lawmakers have been unable to agree on a path forward to fund the government, bringing them to the bring of a shutdown that would lead to the furlough of some 850,000 federal workers.

Even Trump, who the White House declared the ‘deal-maker-in-chief’ on Friday, couldn’t break a Democratic blockade after a meeting with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

Trump tweeted that they had an ‘excellent preliminary meeting’ today in the Oval Office ‘working on solutions for Security and our great Military.’

‘Making progress – four week extension would be best!’ he president said.

Legislation that mirrors Trump’s request already passed in the House of Representatives on Thursday evening. It’s the Senate, where Republicans hold a mere 51 seats, that is the hold-up.

President Trump has spent many a weekend in Palm Beach since he took office a year ago on Jan. 20, 17. According to NBC’s Trump tracker, the billionaire has spent precisely 49 of the last 364 days at the Florida property.

If lawmakers are able to come to an agreement by tomorrow, Trump could still make his gala. It was unclear on Friday evening whether the shutdown threat would lead the Republican Party to cancel it.
