Sir Paul McCartney brings James Corden to tears during Carpool Karaoke in Liverpool

His final single with The Beatles dominated the prestigious music charts nearly five decades ago.

And Sir Paul McCartney has shared the origins behind the legendary singer’s smash hit Let It Be during James Corden’s The Late Late Show Carpool Karaoke segment in Liverpool.

Sending the 39-year-old talk show host into tears, the award-winning pop star, 76, revealed the iconic song was based on a dream about his late mother Mary, who reassured Paul with positivity.

During the Liverpool native’s tour of the English city, the League Of Their Own star gushed over the track’s powerful message on joy and love.

James said: ‘The song touches on positivity, joy, love and togetherness, which I think is more relevant today than ever!’

Speaking on the song’s long-lasting impact, Paul responded: ‘We expected it to last for only 10 years.’

He said: ‘I had a dream in the 60s about my mum, who died when I was young. She came to me and reassured me, saying “it’s going to be okay, just let it be.”  

The belter added: ‘I felt so great, she gave me such positive words. She said “let it be”, so I wrote the song!’

In awe, James responded: ‘That’s the most beautiful story I’ve ever heard’, before the pair put on an energetic display as they sang the track during their drive around Liverpool. 

Following his rendition of the emotional track, the father-of-three burst into tears shortly before stating: ‘[When I was young], I remember my granddad and dad playing this song to me, and said “this is the best song you’ll ever hear.’ 

Indulging in their cosy discussion, James said: ‘If my granddad was here, he would get an absolute kick out of this, before Paul sweetly commented: ‘He is.’

In another segment from the video, the pair visited the songwriter’s former barbershop, where he frequently styled his signature mop-top.  

In another clip, talk show host James giggled like an excited schoolboy as he belted out the lyrics to the British band’s Drive My Car with legendary singer.

Casually-clad Paul put on an animated display as he sang loudly and rocked out with the funnyman in the plush vehicle.

They can be heard singing: ‘Yes, I’m gonna be a star / Baby, you can drive my car / And maybe I’ll love you.’ 

Paul and James ended their tour with a surprise gig at the pub, to which many eager fans sang along in high spirits with the stars.

Gushing over the icon, the Peter Rabbit star confessed it was ‘mind-blowing’ to have the ‘most respected musician on the planet’ Paul join him for the segment.

James’ The Late Late Show has returned to the UK with four special episodes for the second consecutive year, but the funnyman revealed it’s not officially an annual tradition yet.

Chris Pratt, Damian Lewis, J.J Abrams, Ruth Wilson, Cate Blanchett, Orlando Bloom, Niall Horan and Cher as well as Andrew Lloyd Webber all participated in UK week, airing on Sky. 

He told USA TODAY: ‘It’s all memorable. It’s kind of insane, if you think about it — you’re talking about possibly the most famous person in the world.

‘He’s the most respected musician on the planet, and that he would come to do a segment on our show is mind-blowing to me. 

‘He told me a story about how he wrote “Let It Be,” which I’d never heard before. It really moved me, so I can’t wait to share it with people.’

The final show of the four special episodes airs tonight at 10pm on Sky One and NOW TV.
