Snowstorm batters parts of Midwest, 100s of flights…

A wintry storm is battering much of the Midwest bringing blizzard-like conditions that have grounded close to 1,000 flights and closed major highways at the end of the Thanksgiving weekend.

More than 950 flights headed to or from, or within, the US were canceled on Monday, according to the flight-tracking website FlightAware.

Heavy snow was expected to continue through the early hours of Monday with up to a foot (30 centimeters) of snow expected in Chicago, including wind gusts of up to 50 mph (80 kph) likely to cause whiteout conditions, according to The National Weather Service.

Nearly 800 of the canceled flights were scheduled to either begin or end at Chicago O’Hare International Airport.
