Sophie Monk: what REALLY happened to the Bardot Beetles

The 1960s had Beatles fever, but that had nothing on Beetles fever.

While it may not have a comparable place in music history, the few short days reality superstars Bardot were given five Volkswagen Beetles were truly pandemonium.

Now, for the first time, founding member Sophie Monk has revealed to The Courier Mail what happened to the cars producers gave them back in 2000.

Beetles fever: For the first time on Wednesday, Sophie Monk revealed what happened to the five VW Beetles producers gave her girl band Bardot at the height of their fame in 2000

Right as Australia’s first reality TV icons were blowing up thanks to Channel Seven’s Popstars, producers devised a genius marketing move.

It was the perfect cross-promotion: give the hottest car of 2000 to the hottest band of 2000, and watch as crazed fans and paparazzi followed them everywhere.

Well, that’s exactly what happened, to the point they became a huge safety risk for the talent and were replaced.

Ironically, it turns out the only member to maintain her superstar status, was solely responsible for destroying their superstar cars.

‘I smashed four of them. I smashed two bumping into poles. And another I parked on a hill and I kicked my door open and a bus drove by and smashed it off,’ she revealed.

The Bachelorette beauty admitted she went through – and wrecked – ‘every colour’ available, before eventually moving onto her boss’s car.

She ruined that one too: ‘My neighbour knocked on the door and went, ‘Sophie, your car!’ I looked out and it wasn’t there,’ she recalled.

‘I thought someone has stolen it. But I’d forgotten to put the hand brake on and it rolled down and smashed into every car in front of it.’

Eventually, despite the millions of dollars the band were making them, producers became fed-up.

'Smashed four of them': 'I smashed four of them. I smashed two bumping into poles. And another I parked on a hill and I kicked my door open and a bus drove by and smashed it off,' she revealed
