A South Carolina mother has named her baby girl Eclipse after giving birth just hours before the once-in-a-lifetime solar event.

Freedom Eubanks, of Spartanburg, delivered Eclipse Alizabeth Eubanks at 8.04 am yesterday weighing 6 pounds, 3 ounces and measuring 19 inches long.

She was due to give birth on September 3 but instead went into labour early and had her baby at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

A Greenville Health System spokesman said on Facebook: ‘Meet Eclipse! She was born at 8.04 am at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

‘Mom and dad made a last-minute decision to name her Eclipse this morning.’ 

Eclipse’s mother and father, Michael, had originally planned to name their child Violet.

Freedom wrote on Facebook after the birth: ‘Our daughter has went viral! I’ve had some rude comments about her name and I’ve had some very sweet ones but it’s a name – all that matters is that my daughter is healthy and she is here. Thank you all for your love and support.’

‘I kind of felt like it was meant to happen, to have her on this day,’ Eubanks told ABC News. 

She added: ‘We’re probably going to call her Clipsey.’
