St Kevin’s College sets off flares at sports carnival

An elite Melbourne school’s sports carnival was ‘ruined’ by students when a group of teenagers lit flares in the grandstand.

St Kevin’s College were celebrating a victorious win at the Australian Public School (APS) sport finals at Lakeside Stadium on Saturday when witnesses noticed plumes of orange smoke rising from the crowd.

The pupils from St Kevin’s, which costs an annual fee of $17, 830 to attend, were spotted cheering alongside the smoke, which one attended labelled ‘disgusting behaviour’.

Students from rival colleges said they saw the act as classic celebrating ‘taken too far’ and were quickly ushered out of the stadium by their teachers.

‘Smoke was carrying off outside. It ruined the whole day,’ one person told the Herald Sun.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted St Kevin’s and the APS for comment.

The school, which is based in Toorak, has always been a fierce competitor out on the sporting field.

However, it made headlines last year when an old boy from St Kevin’s sued the school for $2 million after suffering a spinal cord injury during rugby practice.

Lachie O’Brien was a Year 11 student when he was left a complete paraplegic after the drill.

St Kevin’s set up a fund in hopes of easing the financial stress associated with his hospital and recovery fees.

‘The Lachlan O’Brien Fund has been established with the challenge of raising at least $1,000,000 for Lachlan,’ Headmaster Stephen Russell wrote at the time.

‘My hope is that 1,000 – individuals or family groups – will be able to find $1,000, but please do not hesitate to simply give what you can.’
