Tasmanians hit by Telstra phone glitch that shifted clocks back

Thousands of Tasmanians have blamed Telstra for being late to work on Friday after a phone glitch caused morning chaos across the state.

Telstra has since apologised for the widespread fault that caused thousands of customers to have the wrong time displayed on their Android phones.

Many Tasmanians reported being late to work after their phones were running an hour early, the ABC reports.

The reaction on social media was a mixture of anger and amusement.

One customer said they dropped their partner at work and then panicked that it was an hour too early while others reported confusion and family squabbles over the correct time, the ABC reported.

Other customers took to Telstra’s Facebook page to vent their frustrations.

‘Because your systems went wild last night and put my phone back 1 hour overnight I was 45 minutes late to work,’ one man posted.

‘I was relaxing.. about to make a coffee when i got a phone call asking where i was. A mad rush to work then happened meaning i missed out on my morning coffee. I believe you should shout me a free coffee for this early April Fools joke.’

Another posted: ‘At least once of the 4g cells at Launceston General Hospital is setting auto time zone back to normal eastern time GMT +10 and putting the time back an hour on phones prematurely. Turning 4g off changes it back. Anyone else have any problems today? Daylight savings doesn’t finish until 1st April.’

Telstra took to Twitter to inform customers in the Apple Isle they were investigating reports that some mobile services may have automatically changed time overnight.

‘Thank you for your patience while we investigate,’ Telstra tweeted.

In a statement to Daily Mail Australia, a Telstra spokesman said the problem has been resolved.

‘The correct time is now being progressively restored to impacted devices. If a customer continues to have the wrong time they should try restarting their device. We are sorry for any inconvenience that was caused,’ he said.

Telstra didn’t not respond to questions as to why the glitch happened, how many customers were affected and what will be done to ensure it doesn’t happen again.

Earlier this month, the Mercury reported that thousands of Tasmanian Telstra customers were offline, with a hardware reboot failing to restore some services.

The telecommunications giant has also been inundated with customer backlash over its recently launched virtual assistant chatbot Codi, which has been slammed as ‘stupid, offensive and the worst idea in the history of customer support’.
