Tatler’s Prince Harry and Meghan Markle engagement tweet

Tatler has spoken out over a tweet that claimed Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are engaged – explaining the post was intended as a ‘joke’.

The society bible posted a short message from the official TatlerUK Twitter account this afternoon that reads: ‘Tatler EXCLUSIVE! Meghan and Harry are engaged [sic]!!’.

The post links to a story on the magazine’s website which includes a light-hearted apology about ‘coming too soon’ and re-directs readers to other stories.

Tatler editor Kate Reardon released a statement explaining the tweet had not been taken down because it is ‘patently a joke’.

She said: ‘We have not removed the tweet because if you look at the page you will see that it’s patently a joke.’

The tweet includes a photo of the couple from the Invictus Games and a link to a story on the magazine’s website. The article features a headline announcing the engagement along with a subheading that reads: ‘It’s FINALLY happened’.

However in place of the story there is a light-hearted apology from the magazine.

It reads: ‘Oops! Sorry, we came too soon. This has genuinely never happened before. Embarrassing, really. Sorry.

‘Just going to, you know, wash my trousers and pop down to the kitchen for, um, crumpets. Mutter, mutter, mutter, mutter, mutter – really never happened before, ask anyone.’

One Twitter follower accused Tatler of being ‘cruel’ by posting the tweet while another said it was ‘disappointing’.

The post comes just 24 hours after it emerged that Miss Markle, 36, reportedly joined Harry, 33, and the Queen for tea last Thursday.

The news sparked renewed speculation that there could be a royal engagement.

The Queen had only returned from her long summer break at Balmoral Castle two days earlier. Prince Philip, who has been spending recent times at Sandringham, was not there.

According to an insider the couple arrived in time for tea at around 5pm. It is the Queen’s favourite part of the day and she loves it when her grandchildren are able to join her.

She normally sits for half an hour eating from a selection of sandwiches, fruit or plain scones and cake.
