‘Tell me that’s not your penis’ is Kiwi quote of the year

An unintentionally hilarious soap opera cliff hanger has been named New Zealand’s ‘quote of the year’.

A February episode of Shortland Street, New Zealand’s top soap opera, ended on a cliffhanger with the words ‘please tell me that is not your penis?’

The episode featured a storyline of an unfortunate sexting session which had seen a teenager’s nude image accidentally end up on the family tablet.

The competition is held annually by  New Zealand’s Massey University, and sees the public vote for their favourite.

The winning phrase had received received 18 per cent of the votes

‘The quote is highly entertaining. The suspense is laughably theatrical, rather than anxiety-inducing, and therefore many people enjoy hearing it again,’ Organiser Heather Kavan told the BBC.

‘And, of course, Chris Warner’s [played by Michael Galvin] delivery is part of the magic, along with Harry Warner’s uncomfortable facial expression and the closing music.’

The scene sees father Chris Warner showed his son Harry his computer tablet which had synced with the teenager’s mobile.

Popular New Zealand soap opera shocked fans with an unexpected ending highlighting the dangers of dating and taking private photos using smartphone cameras

Character Harry Warner appeared to have taken an explicit photo of himself using his camera which then synced to the rest of the house

When Harry arrives home with his girlfriend, his dad hurries her from the house so he can talk to his son.

Maxine Fleming, a producer on the show, was thrilled with the response to the cliff hanger.

‘When I read the script, I was like, that is the cliffhanger of the year for me. It is a comedy story, but like all good comedy there’s a truth at the core of it, and it is social commentary, that story. Many teens are doing stuff like this, and many parents are worried about it.’ she told Stuff.nz at the time.
