The best hostels from around the world for 2019 revealed (and one costs just £3.92 per night)

Rooftops bars, cosy hangout areas with Netflix and traditional cooking classes aren’t what most people would associate with hostels. 

But they are exactly what some of the winning budget properties in this year’s ‘Hoscars’ can offer their guests.   

The awards, the Oscars for hostels, are dished out by Hostelworld.com, which rates budget properties around the world, judging them on value for money, location, atmosphere, facilities, security, character and cleanliness. The winners are picked after judges also analyse reviews from 1.2millions customers, made over the past year, of 36,000 properties in over 170 countries. Scroll down for the winners…

Best in Europe

A night’s stay can cost as little as £14 and it is described as the ideal place for social backpackers looking for a laid-back atmosphere.

Staff also organise daily activities such as trips to local festivals, walking tours and bar tours, which are said to be perfect for those travelling solo.

Best in North America

The Maya Papaya, where stays can cost just £10 if travellers are willing to share, has claimed the title of best hostel in North America.

It is praised for having an authentic Guatemalan breakfast on offer as well as offering fluffy duvets.

The hostel has both indoor and outdoor hangout areas where guests can even watch Netflix.

Best in Oceania
