The foods most commonly pronounced incorrectly

With so many unique international cuisines now available, it’s no surprise that diners often mispronounce the meals on the menu.

So, to help make life a little easier and prevent any awkward encounters, Babbel, a language-learning app, has revealed how to say some of the commonly mispronounced foods.

From French delicacy andouilette to traditional Scottish dish haggis, FEMAIL takes a look at some of the foods we’re all saying incorrectly – and how to get them right.

Italian risotto balls, arancini, (pictured) are among some of the foods many people commonly mispronounce

Andouilette

Heading off the top of the list is French delicacy andouilette.

The food is a type of sausage – one that’s made from pig intestine that’s been squeezed into a casing and fried.

The pronunciation of the dish is ‘ahn-doo-yet’ – the ‘l’ is silent and the ‘t’ is stressed.

Finanziera

While many Italian dishes aren’t too difficult to pronounce, there are a few that can prove problematic.

One of them is finanziera – a hearty farmer’s stew – seems relatively simple to say on first glance but don’t be fooled.

It’s said ‘fi-nan-tsier-a’ – the ‘z’ becomes a ‘c’ sound and there’s an emphasis on the ‘a’ at the end.

What other foods are often pronounced wrong?

Other common mispronounciations include gouda (which is said ‘how-da’ like the Dutch) and the Italian risotto balls, arancini, which is pronounced: ‘a-ruhn-see-ni’.

Another surprising word that we’re all saying completely wrong is ceviche, the classic raw fish dish.

Instead of ‘suh-vee-chay,’ it’s said: ‘she-bee-tche’.

Adding to the list of exotic foods and dishes that are often said wrongly are Vietnamese noodle soup Pho – it is actually pronounced ‘fuh’ and French broth bouillon – which is said ‘Bo-Yon’.

While macaron – small meringue based sweets – can be pronounced either ‘mack-uh-ron’ or ‘mack-uh-roon’, care should be taken to pronounce popular French salad Nicoise ‘Ni Swaz’.

Casu Marzu

Another Italian food that comes with a tricky name to pronounce is is casu marzu.

Casu marzu is a cheese made from sheep’s milk and filled with live maggots.

While it may not be everyone’s cup of tea, those wishing to try the Sardinian specialty should pronounce it ‘ka-sou mar-tsou’.
