The most haunting Home and Away deaths 

 It’s the long-running soap which boasts some of the most memorable TV characters in Australian pop culture.

But even more unforgettable has been how some of Home and Away’s most iconic characters have made their exit from the Channel Seven show.

With Pia Miller’s popular character Katarina Chapman widely believed to be leaving the show in a fatal car crash this month, Daily Mail Australia takes a look at Home and Away’s most haunting deaths.

Alan Fisher: Brain haemorrhage, 1989 

Alan Fisher had a short but memorable stint on Home and Away, killed off in dramatic fashion after just a few months on the show. 

Played by Simon Kay, the teenager died of a brain haemorrhage caused by an inoperable tumour.

Upset that his diagnosis was made public, Alan had refused to heed the advice of his loved ones and took part in a surfing competition which claimed his life.

He collapsed as he made his way out of the water and was declared brain dead, with his life support switched off in hospital.

 Bobby Simpson: Boating accident, 1993 

The death of Bobby Simpson, played by Nicolle Dickson, marked the first major long-running character’s departure on the soap.

After three years on the show, Bobby met her end during an ill-fated boat trip during a Summer Bay fun fair with friends. 

Disaster strikes when their boat runs into a piece of driftwood, causing Bobby to fall out of the boat and hit her head.

Bobby falls into a coma and is declared brain dead with her boyfriend Greg Marshall making the decision to turn off her life support.

After surviving a motorcycle crash, Shane (played by Dieter Brummer) dies unexpectedly in the arms of his wife Angel, played by Melissa George.

He is later revealed to have died of septicaemia after cutting himself on a wire earlier.

 Ailsa Stewart: Heart attack, 2000

The tragic death of Ailsa Stewart after 13 years on the soap shocked audiences to their core.

The beloved wife of show stalwart Alf Stewart collapsed and died of a heart attack while moving boxes.

Speaking to TV Week in May, actress Judy Nunn confessed she had been disappointed by her character’s sudden exit from the show.

‘I was very irritated. And this is the first time I’ve ever, ever admitted it,’ she said. 

‘I couldn’t believe it when I got the script. I thought, ”Oh, come on, mate. After a solid 12 years, she has this stupid little heart attack or she’s seen clutching her chest.”

‘I felt very let down by the powers-that-be, actually. It was just, ”OK, you’re out with the trash now.'”

Ailsa made a shock return to the soap in 2002, reappearing in hallucinations to Alf as he suffers a brain tumour.

After being taken hostage by a psych ward escapee intent on revenge, Noah confessed to a crime he didn’t commit to save his friends and is fatally shot.

He died next to his girlfriend Hayley Lawson, played by onetime off-screen love Bec Hewitt, in the dramatic standoff.

The beloved husband of Sally Fletcher (Kate Ritchie), Flynn Saunders dies of skin cancer in one of Home and Away’s most heart-wrenching episodes.

The Summer Bay doctor, played by Joel McIlroy, discovered he had cancer after completing a demonstration skin check for a group of school kids.

Flynn died in the arms of his wife Sally after stopping chemotherapy so he could die at home.

After finishing her last day as a policewoman, Charlie (Esther Anderson) was shot twice by Jake in her home. 

Rushed to hospital, Charlie’s daughter Ruby made the heart-wrenching decision to turn her life support off.
