A man wearing a Santa hat has swindled a disabled man by stealing his wheelchair, leaving him locked in a toilet for an hour.

The victim had been using a public toilet in Melbourne’s Federation Square on Sunday around 11am when his wheelchair was stolen. 

The cold-hearted thief had struck up a conversation with the 54-year-old wheelchair-bound man at Flinders Street railway station before helping him into a bathroom stall on Birrarung Marr.

When the man took off with the electric wheelchair, the victim was left trapped in the bathroom stall for about an hour, leading senior constable Melissa Seach said.

He was rescued by a passer-by.

The thief, who was wearing a Santa hat, black jumper and camouflage pants, was last seen travelling east in the wheelchair towards Batman Avenue.

He is described as a white man aged between 20 to 24.

Investigators have released images of a man they believe can assist with their enquiries.
