One fan Greg Solon wrote: ‘Thank you @SBS, I’ve missed the first goal of the #WorldCup due to your website problems. You’d think it would have all been tested for such a big event. 20 minutes of trying… screw this, I’m going to bed…’

Another named Matt T added: ‘Why is it every time I try to watch anything online with SBS it’s never working. Champions League and now World Cup. Always some kind of f*** up. Glad you guys are slowly losing the rights to everything.’

A disgruntled fan of Socceroos star Robbie Kruse sarcastically commented: ‘Maybe anticipate internet traffic for the World Cup.’

SBS explained there was a glitch and offered fans the chance to watch on their app instead of their website.

A representative wrote: ‘There’s a glitch on the website right now, but it’s working on the app and on @SBSOnDemand’.

The tournament kicked off in earnest with Russia taking on Saudi Arabia at the Luzhniki Stadium, with the hosts harbouring the added pressure of impressing in front of their home fans.

Thousands of revellers packed inside the sold-out stadium to witness the dazzling opening ceremony, with all the bells and whistles which have become synonymous with similar events of World Cups’ past.
