Toronto baker wraps her Christmas presents inside a cake

What could be more delightful than a beautifully wrapped present? How about a present beautifully wrapped in delicious cake!

Toronto-based cake maker Yolanda Gampp, 40, has become well known for her mind-bending confections that resemble everything from hamburgers to watermelons and even human brains. Her creations are so popular that her YouTube channel How To Cake It has more than 3.4 million followers.

For her latest recipe, Yolanda uses a whopping 26lbs of yellow cake structured to ‘wrap’ a gift box containing a brand new laptop in honor of the gift-giving season.

‘I’m actually combining my two loves. Gift wrapping and cake decorating,’ she says at the start of the new video.

The long chunks of cake are trimmed around the edges to reveal only the bright yellow sponge before soaking them in simple syrup.

Next, Yolanda gift wraps the boxed computer, wrapping it again in plastic to protect it ‘from the buttercream.’

The cake is then sliced into strips used to perfectly surround the giftbox before being slathered in white cream icing.

A 12 by 6 inch slab of the cake is laid down on top of the box and trimmed into a perfect rectangle. While that ‘box’ is chilling, she uses the rest of the vanilla cake to create a second cake box.

For the ‘wrapping’ of the cake boxes, Yolanda rolls out 10lbs of fondant icing and drapes it over the boxes, smoothing over the corners and trimming excess icing away from the bottom.

After chilling the cakes and repairing the edges where the fondant had torn, Yolanda starts putting her decorating expertise to use. She carves gift wrap-like marks in the fondant and cuts dozens of dots and sprinkle shapes from rolled out sheets of fondant.
