Troye Sivan feared he’d lose his record deal by coming out

Troye Sivan’s career is going from strength to strength but there was a moment where he wondered if he’d have one at all.

In 2013, then aged just 17, the singer took to YouTube to tell his sizable online audience that he’s gay, fearing it meant he’d lose his record deal and female fans.

But as he told Andrew Denton on the Interview program on Tuesday night, Troye, now 22, felt he had ‘no choice’ but to disclose who he really was.

He began: ‘It got to the point where I might lose this potential record deal, which is all I’ve ever wanted in my entire life. And I might lose this YouTube audience that I’ve worked really, really hard to build up over the last few years.

‘But what’s the alternative? And the alternative was just unthinkable to me at that point. I couldn’t. I could not stay in the closet any longer. I felt like it was all I thought about. It was suffocating.

‘And at certain point I was like, yeah, this is really, really terrifying, but what other choice do I have? I’m gonna do this, I have to do this,’ the singer confessed.
