Troye Sivan reveals why he isn’t comfortable being labelled a ‘gay icon’

Music superstar Troye Sivan is open about his sexuality, and his hit songs address gay experiences and identity.

But the 23-year-old says he isn’t comfortable with being described as a ‘gay icon’.

Speaking with The Sydney Morning Herald on Saturday, the Youth hit-maker  claimed he doesn’t think it’s ‘realistic’ for him to assume the ‘icon’ label as he is not representative of the ‘diverse’ LGBTQI community.

‘I try and politely step away from that,’ Troye told the newspaper.

He explained: ‘It’s not because I don’t want to be that, but because… I feel like the community is so diverse, there are so many different people and so many different stories.’

The Australian star added: ‘People have tried to cling on and make [me into] some sort of poster child for the LGBTQI community and I just don’t think that’s a realistic thing.’

However, the music star raved about over his beau while speaking with The Sydney Morning Herald.

He revealed he only has a small circle of friends and that Jacob is a constant in busy life which is full of constant travelling.

Troye’s chat with The Herald comes after he opened up about his sexuality on Andrew Denton’s Interview program last month.

The Perth-raised musician claimed he felt compelled to come out of the closet back in 2013, even if he risked losing a record deal and his female fans.

He said: ‘I could not stay in the closet any longer. I felt like it was all I thought about. It was suffocating. And at certain point I was like, “Yeah, this is really, really terrifying, but what other choice do I have? I’m gonna do this, I have to do this.”‘
