Twitter users sympathise with single Princess Beatrice

Her father the Duke of York yesterday declared himself ‘really thrilled’ over his younger daughter’s engagement news, while Eugenie’s mother the Duchess of York went wild with excitement by publishing a series of gushing memes.

However, there was one family member the public did not hear from – Eugenie’s older sister Beatrice, 29, to whom she is very close and expected to honour with a role as bridesmaid on the big day.

Beatrice was last seen publicly attending church with her family at Sandringham on Sunday, but did not make a statement or congratulate her sister publicly yesterday.

While no doubt delighted for long-term couple Eugenie, 27, and Jack, 31, the engagement announcement means Beatrice is the last member of the royal family of marriageable age who is still single.

She split from her boyfriend of 10 years, Dave Clark, in August 2016 only for him to get together with glamorous New York advertising executive Lynn Anderson within two months. The couple announced their engagement in May 2017.

Following yesterday’s announcement, Twitter erupted in sympathy for the royal with many questioning when it would be Beatrice’s turn to find happiness.

One woman said she could relate to the predicament of being the only one left single when everyone else around you is getting married and settling down.

Another questioned whether if, in royal circles, she’s now considered to be ‘on the shelf’.

Beatrice and her long-term boyfriend Dave parted ways in August 2016 after ‘make or break’ talks – centred on whether or not they should get married.

‘They talked it through and decided to take time apart to reflect on the future. They remain friends and the decision to break up was mutual,’ a source said at the time.

The princess met US-born boyfriend through her cousin Prince William who became friendly with Dave while he was doing a study abroad programme at the University of Edinburgh.

However, it was rumoured that the relationship between the two men cooled as William considered Dave ‘indiscreet’ and did not invite him to his wedding to Kate in 2011.

Loyal Beatrice followed Dave to both coasts of America as he pursued his career as head of external affairs with taxi app Uber.

Pressure for Dave to propose intensified after the birth of Princess Charlotte in May 2015, which pushed Beatrice down to seventh in line to the throne.

This meant she no longer needed to seek permission to marry from the Queen, who may well have consulted the Duke of Cambridge on the matter.

Within two months of their split, Dave was spotted on a series of dates with glamorous New York advertising executive Lynn Anderson, then 31, at high profile spots such as London’s Chiltern Firehouse.

In May 2017, Lynn announced they were engaged in an Instagram post describing it as ‘the very best day of my life’, the day before Pippa Middleton’s wedding.

Beatrice was said to be ‘super happy’ for Dave as they had remained friends after the break up.
