Uncle saves two-year-old niece from tragic Dubbo crash

A crash victim has saved his two-year-old niece from the wreckage of a pile up that killed two and injured ten.

The tragic accident happened just after midday on Tuesday on the Newell Highway, north of Dubbo.

A B-Double truck is believed to have slammed into a queue of cars stopped at roadworks. The impact reportedly threw at least one commuter from their vehicle.

Among the dead and injured was a two-year-old girl named Jalirah who was travelling with her family.

Her uncle managed to free Jalirah only moments from being pulled from the wreckage himself, 9 News reported.

‘I was pulled out by a passer-by. As I got out I heard bub crying,’ he told 9 News on Wednesday.

‘I grabbed her out, then tried to get the other passenger and the driver. But I wasn’t able to grab them because they needed to be cut out.’

Jalirah has since been released form hospital.

Her mother is in Dubbo Base hospital in a stable condition. Her sister suffered critical spine injures and remains in Royal North Shore Hospital.

Police said they did not yet know what caused the crashed, but urged drivers not to drive tired. Investigations will continue on Tuesday. 

Emergency crews were still trying to free two people from the wreckage more than three hours after the incident, but the final victim was freed about 4pm on Tuesday. 

‘The two people who are still trapped at the moment are both conscious and alive, and they will also be taken to hospital upon being released from those vehicles,’ NSW Police Superintendent Peter McKenna said earlier in the day. 

A 19-year-old woman and a 19-year-old man, travelling together in one car, died at the scene, NSW Police have said.

An 18-year-old man in another car suffered burns and was taken to Concord Hospital.  

In a third car were the driver, a 43-year-old woman who suffered a broken arm, and two passengers, a 52-year-old woman and 25-year-old man who suffered minor injuries. They were taken to Dubbo Base Hospital.

In a fourth car were the driver, a 26-year-old woman who suffered facial injuries and was taken to Dubbo Hospital, a 24-year-woman who was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital with a suspected spinal injury, a two-year-old girl and a 19-year-old who were taken to Dubbo Base Hospital with minor injuries.

The driver of a utility, a 39-year-old man, and the driver of a B-double, a 27-year-old man, suffered minor injuries and were taken to Dubbo Base Hospital.

The driver of the semi-trailer, a 50-year-old man, suffered leg fractures and suspected internal injuries and was taken to Westmead Hospital.

Spt McKenna says it’s too early to say what caused the crash, but urged people to rest when they need to and avoid using drugs or alcohol when driving.

‘It is another tragedy that I hope isn’t repeated in the near future.’ 

Seven cars, including two trucks, were involved in the horror smash, and 12 people in total were inside the vehicles. 

Earlier, Ambulance NSW Superintendent Kathy Golledge described the scene as ‘absolute carnage’.

‘One car is believed to be completely crushed under a truck,’ she said. 

‘We are treating multiple patients, some are still trapped by compression at this stage.’ 

NSW Roads Minister Melinda Pavey told the ABC a road worker collapsed after witnessing the crash. 

‘It is an absolute horror… We had a worker collapse with shock. This is a terrible, terrible crash,’ she said.

One local tweeted: ‘There’s talk now that the traffic delay will be all day. One bloke just told me ”you don’t wanna go down there”. Sounds terrible.’ 

Eight ambulance crews and three helicopters rushed to the accident site following a triple-0 call at 12.30pm.  

Police said the crash involved four cars and two trucks. They closed the highway in both directions about 20 kilometres north of Dubbo.

Crash investigators and SafeWork NSW officers are en route to the scene.
