An unemployed teacher who was down on his luck has had an instant change in fortunes after scooping almost $700,000 in a Lotto jackpot.

The man, who lives in the now aptly-named suburb Success, south of Perth, said he was left in shock when he found out he had the winning numbers.

He had to confirm with a family he was sitting next to at the time that he was in fact a Lotto winner.

‘When they told me I had all six, I was trembling. The adrenaline has soared through me and now I’m focused on how to sensibly make this money go the distance,’ the man said.

‘I was feeling so unlucky and down, even after I saw I had the first four numbers, I didn’t think I was a big prize winner.’

He said he was not going to purchase an entry for the August 11 Saturday Lotto draw because of how unlucky he had been in recent times but quickly changed his mind.

‘The stars aligned for me that day. I’m so happy I was patient because the winning ticket was waiting for me at that very moment,’ he said.

The man said his $671,513 Division One prize will now set him up for retirement.

‘I’ve always been a teacher and the work has really dried up over the past few months,’ he said.

‘The lack of work and uncertainty of being able to support myself in my imminent retirement really got me down.’

The suburb has lived up to its name in recent times with three Division One tickets sold there this year.

A $20million Division One prize pool will be up for grabs on September 1.
