US soldier dies in a ‘vehicle incident’ in Afghanistan

  • The soldier died in an incident in Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province on Monday

An American soldier has died as a result of injuries sustained during a vehicle incident in eastern Afghanistan, the US military has said.

Two other American service members were injured in the incident, which took place in eastern Nangarhar province on Monday, a statement released by the US forces on Tuesday said.

According to the statement, the US forces were not in contact with enemy forces at the time.  It said the injured soldiers are receiving medical treatment.

The statement added that US Gen John Nicholson, commander of the US troops in Afghanistan, expressed his deepest sympathies and prayers to the families and friends of the fallen and injured service members.

‘We are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our own,’ said Nicholson. ‘Our deepest sympathies and prayers are with the families and friends of our fallen and injured comrades.’

It provides no further information. The military did not identify the dead service member, as the Pentagon usually waits to notify a person’s next of kin.

US troops have supported their Afghan counterparts in the Nangarhar province for nearly two years in a battle against an Islamic State affiliate, according to Stars and Stripes. 

The noncombat death marks the fourth such death of US troops in Afghanistan this year. Eleven US service-members have died as a result of combat incidents.
