Votes quarantined after Liberal volunteer was found marking off votes

Major security breach rocks NSW state election after votes are mistakenly marked off by a Liberal Party volunteer

  • Entire ballot boxes at one election point in NSW have been quarantined
  • A Liberal party volunteer accidentally walked into the role of marking off votes
  • She only realised she had made a mistake when a campaigner contacted her
  • The Labor party have suggested they will be making a formal complaint

Entire ballot boxes at one election point in NSW have been quarantined after a blunder that allowed a Liberal party volunteer to mark off the votes.

The woman has found herself in the centre of a major security breach at the Strathfield polling booths, in Sydney’s Inner West.

The seat is currently held by Labor with a slim margin of just 1.8 per cent.

She allegedly arrived this morning at the booth with the intention of handing out pamphlets in support of the local Liberal candidate, Philip Madirazza.

When she arrived, she was allegedly ushered into a room where she signed an official code of conduct by Commission staff.

She was then told to start marking off votes, a source told The Daily Telegraph.

It wasn’t until she received a text from the Liberals asking where she was that she realised she may have made a mistake, the source claims.

‘She went outside asking if she had made a mistake.

The Commission is believed to have quarantined all the ballot boxes that she was involved with, or may have come into contact with.

A senior Labour source confirmed to the publication the party would be making a formal complaint.

‘We are obviously very concerned about this conduct, and have reported the matter to the NSW Electoral Commission for a thorough investigation,’ the source said.

NSW residents around the state have been heading to designated polling booths to vote for their local MP as well as to vote for state leadership.

Gladys Berejiklian and Michael Daley have been heavily campaigning in the days leading up to the voting.
