Wallabies’ George Smith arrested for taxi driver attack

  • Former Wallabies star George Smith has been arrested for punching a taxi driver 
  • Smith reportedly refused to pay a $114 taxi fare, before fleeing from the cab 
  • He was arrested on Wednesday following the alleged incident on New Years Eve 
  • Smith is playing for Suntory Sungoliath in Japan but is due to return to Brisbane

Former Wallabies star George Smith has been arrested for allegedly punching a taxi driver on New Years Eve in Japan. 

Smith, 37, was arrested by Japanese police on Wednesday after he allegedly refused to pay a 10,000 yen ($114AUD) cab fare, punched the driver and fled. 

The driver chased Smith, according to local newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun Daily.

The newspaper said Smith denied the allegations.  Local police have not yet commented on the arrest. 

Smith is currently playing for the Suntory Sungoliath in Japan but is due to return to Brisbane to play Super Rugby with the Reds. 

In a company statement, Suntory Sungoliath confirmed Smith had been arrested. 

‘We issue a heartfelt apology to the victim, as well as other related people, as well as to the many people who have worried and been caused problems by this,’ the company said.
