Waste dumped kills everything but three turtles in Sydney

  • Huge dump of toxic liquid killed an entire pond of wildlife except three turtles
  • The pond in Sydney’s north had to be dug out and emptied costing $150,000
  • Huge fines of up to a reported $5 million could apply if people are taken to court

One of the biggest pollution incidents in history for the northern beaches killed all the wildlife in a pond after hundreds of thousands of litres of toxic waste was dumped into a drain.

About 200,000 litres of oil-like liquid ended up in a pond in Sydney’s northern suburbs.

The devastating incident killed everything in the pond except three native eastern long-necked turtles, according to Manly Daily.

‘This is one of the biggest pollution incidents we’ve had to deal with as Northern Beaches Council … we’re still dealing with the after-effects,’ Northern Beaches Mayor Michael Regan said.

Photos show a council worker standing in thigh-deep water cleaning the mucky mess which had significant environmental impacts.

The three sole surviving turtles were covered in thick grim over their shells.

The toxic liquid was dumped on Christmas Eve and flooded a Beacon Hill pond.

The northern Sydney council are unsure how many people were involved in the dumping and if taken to court a reportedly $5 million fine could apply.

The damage was so severe the entire pond had to be emptied and dug out, costing the council $150,000.
