Wayne Rooney had slurred speech and couldn’t remember his own phone number to give to police when he was arrested at a US airport.

The footballer, 33, was found leaning on a rail by police officers after going through a secure door, because he thought it was a lift, at Dulles International Airport, in Washington in December last year.

England’s all time leading goalscorer was arrested for public intoxication and later fined $24, and required to pay $91 court costs.

A police report of the incident, obtained by Deadspin said: ‘On December 16, 2018, at 0915 hours, I was dispatched to Gate A16 for the report on a person going through a secure door.

‘When I arrived I observed an individual leaning on the railing with a black backpack on the floor at his side.

‘I approached the individual and asked what happened, and in his broken English, he stated he went through the door at the bottom of the stairs because he thought it was a lift.

‘The subject provided a United Kingdom passport and the individual was identified as Wayne Mark Rooney.’

The report went on to say Mr Rooney had ‘slurred speech’, was ‘unsteady on his feet’ and also could not provide his telephone number when asked by an officer, as reported by The Sun.

As the report notes, the footballer was then arrested for public intoxication and brought before a magistrate, where he was held until sober.

Rooney, who is currently serving a two-year drink-drive ban in the UK, had been on a short trip to Saudi Arabia before the latest drama unfolded on December 16.

In a statement at the time a spokesman said Mr Rooney became ‘disorientated’ after taking sleeping pills.

‘Wayne Rooney was arrested and detained at Dulles airport following a long flight from Saudi Arabia after a one-day promotional business trip.

‘During the flight Wayne took a prescribed amount of sleeping tablets mixed with some alcohol consumption and consequently was disorientated on arrival.

‘He was approached by police who arrested him on a minor misdemeanor charge.

‘He received a statutory automatic fine and was released shortly afterwards at the airport. The matter is now at an end.

‘Wayne would like to put on record his appreciation for the manner he was treated by all involved.’

After his arrest Rooney flew back to the UK to spend time with his wife Coleen and their four sons.
