White House misspells ‘Seperation’ in executive order ending family separation

The White House is being mocked on Twitter after a major typo was revealed in Donald Trump’s executive order ending family separation at the border.

Right at the top of the executive order was the headline: ‘Affording Congress an Opportunity to Address Family Seperation’.

The typo was also in the URL for the document, which was posted on the White House’s official website.

Many were quick to point out the irony of the administration misspelling the very word that has had it embroiled in weeks of controversy as thousands of children were separated from their parents at the US-Mexico border.

The first version of the executive order was pulled down after being posted online and quickly replaced with a typo-free version.

But that didn’t stop many on Twitter from having fun with what has become yet another major typo in a White House document.

‘And the word “Separation” is misspelled in the title of the executive order, because, of course it is,’ Frank Thorp V tweeted on Wednesday.

‘Only the Trump administration could issue an Executive Order to undo a policy it claimed it did not exist, but anyway had no power to alter because it was made by the Democrats, then proceed to misspell “separation”‘, added actor George Takei.

‘Is misspelling “separation” like issuing an executive order with your fingers crossed behind your back?’ Matthew Yglesias quipped.

The administration has previously been mocked for spelling Theresa May’s name as ‘Teresa’ throughout a memo highlighting her visit to the White House.

And Trump came under fire just weeks ago when he misspelled his own wife’s name as ‘Melanie’ instead of ‘Melania’ to welcome her back home after surgery.

Trump’s decision to sign the family separation executive order was an abrupt U-turn on the divisive policy that was put into place by his own administration.

The order directs the Department of Homeland Security to detain families together so long as children are not put into danger.

‘I didn’t like the sight or the feeling of families being separated,’ the president said on Wednesday.

Trump indicated that lobbying from his daughter Ivanka, who showed him pictures of the caged and kenneled children, and wife Melania had caused him to have a change in position.

‘Ivanka feels very strongly about it. My wife feels very strongly about it. I feel very strongly about it. I think anybody with a heart would feel very strongly about it,’ he said.

Immediately after her father signed the order, Ivanka made her first public comments on the matter.

‘Thank you @POTUS for taking critical action ending family separation at our border,’ she said. ‘Congress must now act + find a lasting solution that is consistent with our shared values; the same values that so many come here seeking as they endeavor to create a better life for their families.’

Trump also said that Congress would have to take action – and that he still wants his border wall funded.

‘And also, there may be some litigation. We’re also wanting to go through Congress. We will be going through Congress. We’re working on a much more comprehensive bill,’ he said.

‘At the same time, we are keeping a very powerful border and it continues to be a zero-tolerance,’ Trump added. ‘We have zero tolerance for people that enter our country illegally.’

As Trump acknowledged, he did not end the ‘zero tolerance’ provision of his policy that requires the prosecution of all unlawful immigrants as criminals, even if they are seeking asylum.

The president’s order merely authorizes DHS to hold families together while prosecution is pending.
