Why Ewan McGregor is the cruelest man in Hollywood

Ewan McGregor was always one of my favourite leading men. Whether he was starring in Moulin Rouge! or Trainspotting he could do gritty and he could do gorgeous.

What I admired most was how grounded he seemed off-screen, with his tireless charity work and apparent devotion to family — he has a heart and dagger tattoo with his wife’s and daughters’ names on his arm.

So I was shocked when he was pictured in October publicly smooching Mary Elizabeth Winstead, his co-star in the TV series Fargo.

I was appalled when it emerged he’d abandoned his wife Eve and four daughters, the youngest of whom is just six, to be with her.

And I felt nothing but contempt when, collecting a gong at the Golden Globe Awards earlier this week, he publicly thanked both his wife and new girlfriend for their support.

I can’t think of anything more insulting or cruel to Eve, 51, than bracketing her in this way with the woman who’s not only ousted her in her husband’s affections, but is also 18 years her junior.

For 22 years, Eve devoted herself to McGregor, raising the children while he gallivanted across the globe filming in exotic locations. And yet, the woman who has been with Eve’s husband for just three months has been given equal billing. It seems he just could not care less.

To make things even worse, on Thursday at the Critics’ Choice Awards, he paraded Mary for the cameras, sitting with her and kissing her, before collecting another award and then thanking her — again.

Most dumped wives only have to suffer the pain of knowing their husband is with another woman. McGregor has been flaunting his new love to the world. Twice in a week.

How raw Eve’s pain must be.

And yet this is a man who parades himself as a humanitarian and was awarded the OBE for services to charity. As a Unicef ambassador he is constantly on our screens asking us to dig deep, to show compassion to the world’s starving children.

What a tragedy he could not muster any compassion for his own wife. At the next awards ceremony he should get the gong for the cruellest man in Hollywood.

A 14-year-old girl won a historic case against Facebook after suing the company for allowing naked photographs of her to be posted on the site in what was an act of revenge porn. It’s very brave of the girl, but isn’t it shocking that we live in a world where naked pictures of the child were taken in the first place?

Mum’s poignant praise for NHS

As criticism of the NHS reaches new heights, with claims that patients are dying in hospital corridors due to lack of beds, we should listen to someone with the most pressing reason to air her views.

Heather Teale’s beautiful daughter Bethany, 18, died after catching flu and developing pneumonia. She was airlifted to the intensive care unit but nothing could be done.

Yet Heather has nothing but praise for the health service: ‘Bethany was given the best possible treatment from a team of eight people for over two hours, but despite their best efforts, she didn’t make it.’ Bear her words in mind the next time some opportunist indulges in gratuitous NHS bashing.

Meghan tries a ‘Shy Di’ look

A childhood friend says Meghan Markle was so fascinated by Diana she read every book about her. Perhaps that explains why the media-savvy TV star came over all coy on her second official engagement with Harry, in Brixton. I swear that little-me pose with her fingers to her lips was modelled on Di’s ‘shy’ look. The difference is that Diana at this stage was a 19-year-old ingénue — not a worldly divorcee of 36.

The Army’s new PC recruitment campaign saying it’s OK to be fat, to cry and to pray in the Forces coincides with plans to slash soldier numbers (again!) by 14,000 as well as merge the Royal Marines with the Paras to save cash. By what kind of skewed logic can anyone have concluded that recruiting snowflakes and decimating our elite Armed Forces is the way to defend our country?

Serena Williams almost died giving birth to daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian.

She says she suffered months of self-doubt over whether she was a good enough mother and felt trapped.

Her solution was to return to playing tennis three months later.

But she also says she won’t spend a day apart from Alexis until she’s 18 — which means the poor little mite’s childhood will be spent travelling the world, on the tennis circuit and living in hotels.

Who would wish that on any child?

 Gwynnie’s non-fun

Gwyneth Paltrow is now engaged to Glee co-creator Brad Falchuk, four years after ‘consciously uncoupling’ from Coldplay frontman Chris Martin

Four years after her ‘conscious uncoupling’ from Chris Martin, Gwyneth Paltrow is to marry again.

Hurrah. I bet friends can’t wait for her non-gluten, non-dairy, non-caffeine, non-sugar, non-meat and alcohol-free wedding reception.

Try real stress, doc

A magistrate spared a junior doctor jail after she was caught drink-driving twice in two months. The woman said that the stress of studying made her addicted to alcohol and she has since sought help.

In one incident, the doctor drank a bottle of wine at lunch, bought a second after that, and drank it — before driving off and crashing her car in an area busy with pedestrians.

While I have the greatest compassion for Lauren Fowler, 25, if studying drives her over the edge, what chance does she have on the front line of the NHS?

Oh how confusing football is. Pundits are hailing the FA’s adoption of the Rooney Rule to promote diversity — it’s named after Dan Rooney from the U.S. National Football League, who created a system where minority ethnic former players are given a shot at coaching jobs.

I thought it was named after our own Wayne (pictured) and applied only to us girls: If Rooney touches you, show him the red card.

With a six-pack to rival Daniel Craig’s, James Norton is considered one of our hottest actors and tipped as a future Bond.

He went topless in War And Peace and the detective series Grantchester, and now he’s at it again in the BBC’s risible Russian thriller McMafia. Trouble is James, you could never be 007 — your tummy turns out to be as flabby as your acting.

 Westminster Wars

  •  Business leaders paid £12,000 to attend a ball in China where David Cameron was guest speaker. The advert said the price was a steal compared to tickets for the Victoria’s Secret fashion show last year, which changed hands for an eye-watering £39,000. But then, who wouldn’t prefer a parade of near-naked lingerie models to the blatherings of an Emperor with no clothes?
  • Very disappointing news that Tory MP Peter Bone has abandoned his wife for a married physiotherapist 20 years his junior. The only distinctive thing about the Bonehead was his constant comical references in Parliament to Mrs Bone, who came across as a voice of common sense and decency from the Shires. The lovers have been spending nights in his £1.5 million taxpayer-funded Westminster apartment. It’s one thing us footing MPs’ bills for their wives’ accommodation — but should we pay for their mistresses, too?
  • No sooner had Esther McVey ventured into No 10 as the new Work and Pensions Secretary, than Corbyn’s hate-mob took to Twitter to call her ‘a murderer, a whore and a bitch’, along with death threats. And still they try to say the Tories are the nasty party.

A reader’s letter in The Times: ‘Virgin Trains says that it has stopped selling the Daily Mail as it is incompatible with Virgin’s beliefs. True indeed. Every day the Daily Mail arrives on time.’

Colourful? Me too

As a symbol of sombre solidarity with the victims of the #MeToo movement, actresses wore black to Sunday’s Golden Globes.

Fast-forward to Thursday’s Critics’ Choice Awards and, while Reese Witherspoon and Laura Dern remained in mourning, Angelina Jolie wore white, Nicole Kidman hot pink, and Jessica Biel white, red and black. That sisterly gesture unfurled faster than you can say hashtag.
