Will Ferrell gifted a plush toy wombat at Australian Open

He had the crowd in stitches during a hilarious spoof courtside interview with Roger Federer on Tuesday night.

And Will Ferrell will certainly remember his trip to Melbourne’s Australian Open, receiving a plush toy wombat during a press conference on Thursday.

The comedian was gifted the toy marsupial in cheeky reference to his Anchorman impression at Rod Laver Arena on Tuesday with Will asking Roger if he ate ‘wombat meat’.

The Daddy’s Home star kept the laughs coming on Thursday, telling the tennis media pack wombat didn’t taste like chicken and was a ‘sinewy, tough meat’.

Will also concluded that Roger seemed ‘a little bit afraid of him’ during his surprise on-court interview with the sports star following his first-round match.

The actor had channeled Anchorman character Ron Burgundy to ask the Swiss tennis player if he ate ‘wombat meat’ and if he was ‘a witch or a vampire’ two days earlier.

Will also jokingly announced his retirement from acting and said Taylor Swift was the best celebrity tennis player.

‘I have kind of done all the movies I want to do. It’s a great way to go out,’ Will told the media.

All jokes aside, Will said he’s a big tennis fan and was invited by an Australian friend to come watch the tournament for a couple days this year.

The comedian said he has checked out a few matches, including Roger’s first-round victory over Aljaz Bedene and Caroline Wozniacki’s dramatic comeback win over Jana Fett after saving two match points at 1-5 in the third set.

Tennis fan Will also revealed that he considered playing the role of Bobby Riggs in  a film about the famous ‘Battle of the Sexes’ tennis match between Riggs and Billie Jean King in 1973.

But unfortunately a competing project headlined by Steve Carrell had already started filming.

‘I would have loved to (have played Riggs),’ Will said. ‘I think he was a fascinating character.’

He’s also a fan of Australia after his visit, though he has one piece of advice for the country: ‘I think driving on the wrong side of the road needs to be switched.’

Will added: ‘It’s very hard to drive over here, for me. … That’s probably an easy thing to fix, right?’
