Winx wins world record 17th group one race at Rosehill Gardens in Sydney

Wonder mare Winx has won a world record 17th Group One race after taking out the George Ryder Stakes at Sydney’s Rosehill Gardens on Saturday afternoon.

The champion horse hit the finish line almost a length ahead of second placed Happy Clapper to claim the world record, and her 24th straight win. 

Happy Clapper was praised by pundits after the race for challenging Winx all the way to the post in the exciting showdown.

But Winx found a way to hold on for the victory, three weeks after surpassing Black Caviar’s previous Australian record for most Group One wins. 

The 17th Group One wins beats the previous record set by by American horse John Henry in 1984. 

Jockey Hugh Bowman said after the race: ‘What a special, special horse she is. I’m so grateful to be her jockey.’

He added that Winx ‘had to work’ for the victory, after Happy Clapper challenged her in the second half of the race. 

‘A lot of credit it to Happy Clapper today, from the 800m it was a high class speed,’ he said.
