Woman who found newborn baby boy abandoned outside of medical centre pens moving letter to mother

The woman who found an abandoned newborn baby boy in a box outside a medical centre has written a heartfelt appeal to his mother.

Baby Rahil was less than 24 hours old when he was found wrapped in a dirty towel and stuffed in a box with his umbilical cord still attached outside Garden City Medical Centre in Booragoon, Perth, on Wednesday at about 8am.

The woman, who has chosen to stay anonymous, penned an emotional letter to the mystery mother begging her to come forward and claim her child.

‘This is a message for you, Mum,’ the message, which was shared with 9News, reads.

‘The tears I’ve cried, I’ve cried for you. Some in public and some alone. I know you are deeply broken… I’m truly sorry that you have been pushed so far over the edge having to let go of your baby.’

The note then tells the mother that she has been forgiven and that she only wants the mother to seek medical attention to ensure she’s safe and healthy.

She also expresses that she wants to make sure that the mother, no matter her circumstances, have people out there that love her.

‘You need to know that you are loved. You might feel condemned and you might hate yourself for the decision you’ve made to leave your baby at the door of this medical practice,’ she writes.

‘But, you’ve done that, because I believe you wanted to make sure your baby will be in good hands.’

Since the baby was discovered on Wednesday, hundreds of people have reached out and offered to adopt the newborn baby.

‘Ready to adopt him with all my heart and soul,’ one woman wrote online.

‘How do we adopt this baby?’ another wrote.

A desperate search continues for the newborn’s mother, who attached a note pleading for someone to look after him.

The attached note written by the boy’s mother said his name was Rahil, which can mean ‘traveller’ or ‘innocent’ .

West Australian Premier Mark McGowan has urged the mother to come forward to get treatment.

‘All people want to do is support her,’ he told reporters.

‘Get some medical attention. The government wants to help you.’

Police commissioner Chris Dawson said she could contact police anonymously or the Department of Communities – responsible for disadvantaged individuals.

‘We do want to locate the mother, not for police reasons in terms of pursuing criminal conduct or anything, it’s about her health and welfare,’ he told 6PR radio.

Police say Raheel had only been left abandoned outside the medical centre for 10 minutes before he was found.

The medical centre notified police and St John’s Ambulance took the newborn, who appears to be in good health, to Perth’s Children Hospital.

‘The baby is fine… he’s doing well and he was taken to Perth Children’s Hospital for assessment,’ Detective Sergeant Dixie Johnson told reporters.

Fremantle Detectives are investigating the incident and will look at CCTV footage.

Anyone with any information regarding the identity of the mother is asked to call police or contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
