Woolworths claims butter is Australian made when it is actually made in New Zealand

I can’t believe it! Woolworths is claiming to sell ‘Australian made’ spread – when it’s actually manufactured in New Zealand

  • Woolworths is selling a product marked as ‘Australian made’ on its website
  • Upon closer inspection the product is actually made offshore in New Zealand
  • New laws which came into effect on July 1 have cracked down on origin labels

Woolworths claims to be selling ‘Australian made’ butter which is actually made in New Zealand.

The ‘Essentials Salted Butter’ is described as being ‘Australian made’ on the supermarket chain’s website and is on sale for $2.80.

However the back of the product labelling clearly states it is a ‘product of New Zealand’.

Under ‘product details’ on the Woolworths website the product is described as being ‘made in New Zealand’ but ‘packed in Australia’.

Reforms regarding country of origin food labelling came into effect on July 1, and state food products must display clearly where the product came from and where it was packed.

The Woolworths butter carries the new label, which states the product was made in New Zealand.

However it is still being listed as ‘Australian made’ on the supermarket’s website.

Under Australian Consumer Law, a product can be claimed as ‘made in’ a country if the company can demonstrate that it ‘underwent its last substantial transformation in the country claimed’.

‘Unlike the ‘”grown in'” or “‘product of'” claims, the source of a product’s individual ingredients or components is not relevant to a ‘”made in'” claim,’ the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission guide to country of origin claims states.

‘This means that a good doesn’t need to contain any ingredients or components from a country to be able to claim that it was ‘made’ in that country.’

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Woolworths for comment.
