Wreath Witherspoon Christmas decor is bigger than ever

Reese Witherspoon fans are celebrating the actress and showing a little silliness this Christmas season by hanging ‘Wreath Witherspoons’ in their homes.

Inspired by a 2014 episode of The Mindy Project, the décor involves simply transforming a traditional holiday wreath with tacked-on pictures of the Award-winning actress, taking it from everyday wreath to Wreath Witherspoon.

The trend has grown more and more popular over the past few years, and this season it’s reached full-force, with scores of fans sharing pictures of their Big Little Lies star-inspired handiwork on social media.

Reese, 41, has joked in the past that some of her friends use the Christmas-themed nickname during the holidays. In a clip promoting her lifestyle brand Draper James, she proudly owned up to the name.

‘Sometimes at Christmas time my friends call me Wreath Witherspoon,’ she said in the video, ‘but there’s lots of other celebs with Christmas names.’

She names ‘Christmas Eve-a Longoria,’ ‘Ho Ho Ho-wen Wilson,’ and ‘Jolly Parton’ as examples.

But whether or not friends actually call her by the Christmasy moniker, it’s new friend Mindy Kaling — with whom she worked on the upcoming adaptation of the children’s classic book A Wrinkle in Time — that made the idea of an actual Wreath Witherspoon go viral.

In a season three episode of her show titled Christmas, she and on-again off-again boyfriend Danny Castellano argue about the holiday décor in his home. He refuses to let her put a Rihanna Christmas tree topper in his home, saying, ‘you’re lucky I let you put up that wreath.’

Mindy scoffs, standing before a wreath on the front door pasted with 14 images of Reese.

‘Wreath Witherspoon? This is the nicest thing in your apartment,’ she tells him.

Around the same time, the real-life Mindy Instagrammed a screengrab of other Wreath Witherspoon projects on Pinterest, which Reese gleefully regrammed.

The joke kept going, with Reese sharing a snap of herself peeking through a wreath and Mindy congratulating Reese on her 2015 Oscar nomination for Wild by sending her a wreath with pictures Oscar statues all over it.

In December 2016, Reese visited Ellen DeGeneres, who asked her about the growing craze.

‘I blame Mindy Kaling!’ she said. ‘She did something on her show, where she had a wreath and it had a picture of my face on it!’

Ellen then showed off her own Wreath Witherspoon on the show, and Reese shared that she named a dress from her Draper James the Wreath Witherspoon Dress. There was also a skirt featuring the red and white wreath print, though both have sold out.

More and more fans caught on, and this year quite a few have posted photos of their own wreaths on Instagram and Twitter.

Some chose simple green or grapevine wreaths, while others further decorated with tinsel, bows, glitter, and ornaments.

A few creative types without a base wreath on hand simply pasted together several photos of Reese in a circle.
