Brave shopkeeper grabs hold of knife-wielding robber and throws him out of his store after the attacker asks for cigarettes and then pulls a huge blade out of his coat

  • The raid happened at in Batley, West Yorkshire, at around 5.30pm yesterday
  • Police have now arrested a man in his thirties following the robbery 
  • The robber pulled out his knife when the shopkeeper turned his back to get cigarettes  

This is the heroic moment a gutsy shopkeeper wrestles a knife-wielding robber from his store.   

Dramatic CCTV from the store in Bately, West Yorkshire, yesterday evening shows the armed raider pull out a long blade and point it at the owner’s throat.

But the defiant shopkeeper has no intention of letting the thug steal from the store, grabbing him by the collar with one hand while keeping the knife away with the other before shoving him out of the door. 

Police have now arrested a man in his thirties who they believe ‘asked for cigarettes’ before threatening the shopkeeper when his back was turned.

The assailant then unzips his jacket and pulls out a large weapon thrusting it towards the shopkeeper.

A struggle then starts between the attacker and the shopkeeper as they both grapple in the middle of the store. 

However, the shopkeeper was able to gain the upper hand and pushes the attacker back towards the entrance of the shop.

He slams the raider into the shop door and then throws him out of the store with the attacker seemingly fleeing the scene.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: ‘Detectives have arrested a man following a robbery in Batley yesterday afternoon.

‘The incident happened on Wednesday 13 March at around 17:30 at Patbro’s newsagents on Branch Road. 

‘A male entered the shop asking for cigarettes; while being served the suspect approached the shop keeper from behind and threatened him. 

‘The suspect demanded money and cigarette but was refused and there was an altercation and the male victim suffered a minor injury to his ear.

‘The suspect, in his 30s, then fled the scene but was quickly arrested by police officers.’ 

The video has shocked many locals who have commended the shopkeeper for his bravery.

Darren Gregson said: ‘Shopkeeper soon sorted him out.’

Claire Fox added: ‘Good on him he was very brave. Now I know why the police were in Batley.’

Lindsay Hunter wrote: ‘Good on him I know the brothers well I’ve been going in that shop years. Its awful, hope he’s ok.’

Sabeela Shahzad said: ‘Too close to that knife. Glad he’s not hurt.’
