Zoella reveals she battles tough days as she opens up about depression

Millionaire YouTube star Zoella has described the internet as a ‘cure and a curse’ in a candid Instagram post addressing her mental health battles.

The 28-year-old blogger, who was last month named as the second biggest earner on the 2018 Influencer rich list – and can reportedly earn up to £12,190 per post – admitted she’s been battling tough days.

In the honest post, Brighton-based Zoella, who shot to fame with her YouTube channel nine years ago, opened up about how she’s been attempting to work through her mental health issues – including anxiety – for three and a half years, but admitted she still succumbs to feeling ‘frustrated and deflated’ and can ‘beat herself up’ as a result.

She warned of the negative side effects of being part of a ‘generation of scrollers’, describing the web’s potential detrimental impact to the wellbeing of her 11million followers.

Millionaire vlogger Zoella, from Brighton, has spoken out about her battle with anxiety in a candid confession on Instagram, revealing that she had her tough days which weren’t helped by the internet

Kicking off the brave post, Zoella wrote: ‘Anyone with some form of mental illness will have those days where they feel invincible, you tick everything off your list.

‘You feel like you can think more clearly & that the hurdles have been taken away for a clear run to the finish line. It’s one of the best feelings in the world.

‘It’s the feeling you wish you had ALL THE TIME but in reality, it doesn’t always work that way,’ she admitted.

Continuing, she described the obstacles she still faced, writing:  ‘Having been working every week for three and half years on my anxiety I’ve certainly moved mountains, but those mountains are still there & they are tough to climb on some days.’

Sharing an insight into her anxiety, she said: ‘I definitely beat myself up about it more now than I used to, I get frustrated & feel deflated.

‘I worry that people won’t understand because I’m not ‘the anxious person’ that I used to be. In reality, it doesn’t matter, because everyone is fighting a battle & some days it will always feel harder than others regardless of what you’re battling.’

Zoella went onto explain that she was passionate about highlighting mental health on her platforms, which include a YouTube channel boasting over 12 million followers, and named the internet as one of the biggest causes for concern.

She said: ‘It’s a cure, but it’s also a curse. It’s a place to find like-minded people who share the same interests, experience the same issues you do & a place to feel less alone.

‘It can also be a place that harbours & breeds negativity (which only seems to be getting worse) & I’ve seen first hand the awful effects that can have on someone (myself included),’ she added.

Describing the internet as a 'cure and a curse', she admitted feeling the 'negativity' was getting worse and could be detrimental to users' wellbeing

Zoella then urged followers to unfollow anyone whose posts sparked negative emotions, encouraging them to spread love and positivity in turn.

She added: ‘We are a generation of scrollers & we consume so much on the internet that we probably don’t realise how much of it is detrimental to us or our wellbeing.’

Concluding, she wrote: ‘The internet is a fantastic tool for so many amazing things, let’s drown out the bad stuff by spreading more of the good.

‘Encourage, support & have more empathy for others in this space, who may be going through a tough time & need it more than you’ll ever know.’

In March Zoella revealed to Glamour that she has has weekly therapy sessions, but admitted it will take some time to ‘unravel’ the mental health issues she’s been battling since the age of 14.

Speaking to the magazine the vlogger, who has an estimated £2.5million net worth, revealed she regularly attends therapy sessions and takes ‘digital detoxes’ as she lifted the lid on life in the public eye.
