$10million James Bond mansion in Hawthorn, Melbourne boasts underwater games room and unique design

From the outside, passers-by would never guess a quaint one-storey home with leafy native gardens hides a modern mansion with a James Bond-esque garage and an underwater games room.

The heritage-listed cottage, with its contemporary extension, sits in the leafy inner-Melbourne suburb of Hawthorn just east of the city centre.

At the front, the family home oozes period charm with original windows and a classic facade, while the rear is a sleek and sophisticated architectural space that blends the indoors with the out.

In the basement is a teenagers’ retreat that houses a full-sized billiards table, TV area, dart board and foosball table – but the most striking feature is the floor-to-ceiling window looking into a swimming pool.

Also in the underground level is a five-car garage with a James Bond-style car turntable to easily manoeuvre any vehicle out the ramped-driveway.

The traditional style of the home’s exterior is contrasted by chic polished concrete as soon as guests step foot in the door into the minimalist entryway, home office, living room and bedrooms.

A dividing wall with an integrated book case stops short to blend the study and the informal living room together and a feathered concrete ledge runs between the rooms.

The home’s heritage charm isn’t lost among the modern design as original timber sash windows, a mottled glass front door and rich hardwood floors remain intact.

On the far side of the lounge is an intriguing circular glass wall that runs all the way through the home past the stairway and kitchen and into the family room.

Light pours into the main lounge through the stretching window wall overlooking the pool while a suspended fireplace place warms the airy space

The glass wall peels back to merge the open-plan family room with the curved central courtyard with a sunken entertainment area, barbecue and wrap-around pool.

Upstairs there are two bedrooms, a master suite with a study nook, walk-in robe and ensuite and a lift runs from the top level down to the ground floor.

After Bill, who runs his own development company WAF Construction with Steph, ‘worked seven days a week for a year’ to restore the property, the parents and their three teenage children moved into their dream family home.

It was the couple’s ‘final family home’ which they moved into from across the street and they are now downsizing now that most of the kids have flown the nest.

The Hawthorn home has been placed on the market with a price guide of $10million.

Listing agent Jock Langley of Abercromby Armadale told FEMAIL the home has attracted multiple bidders both local and offshore and expects the price guide to be met.

‘As you can imagine, with the cost of construction coupled with with premium location, you’re always going to have good interest in houses like that,’ he said.
