15 of the best Super Bowl Sunday ads

There is about to be an influx of puppies and celebrities on your television screen, which can only mean one thing – it’s Super Bowl Sunday.

It’s no secret that the multi-million dollar commercials that air between plays are almost as beloved as actually watching the game.

With more than 100 million people tuning in, the pressure has always been high for major brands to deliver ads that will be the talk of Monday morning.

This year’s commercials are packed with celebrities trying to sell everything from sparkling water and Skechers slippers to dating apps and peanuts.

And CBS’ hefty $5.25million price tag for a 30-second slot clearly didn’t deter the likes of Amazon and Pepsi to bring out major stars including Harrison Ford, Cardi B, Steve Carrel, and the Backstreet Boys.

So, without further ado, here are 15 of the top commercials to get excited while you watch the New England Patriots take on the Los Angeles Rams.

AMAZON

With its CEO currently embroiled in a front-page affair scandal, Amazon surely hopes its celebrity-packed ad will take some attention off of Jeff Bezos.

The commercial follows an employee revealing some of the company’s biggest ‘fails’ when it comes to Alexa, Amazon’s virtual assistant.

One scene shows Oscar-winning actor Forest Whitaker asking his Alexa toothbrush to play his podcast, only for it to be muffled the minute he puts the brush inside his mouth.

Another shows an adorable pup repeatedly ordering food on his Alexa dog collar, much to the anger of his owner Harrison Ford.

Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson also get shot out of an Alexa hot tub after asking her to play some tunes, accidentally setting off a fountain show the rivals the Bellagio.

PEPSI

For its Super Bowl ad, Pepsi decided to tackle a question asked daily throughout American restaurants.

A girl walks into the diner and orders a Coke, only for the waiter to ask: ‘Is Pepsi okay?’

Steve Carrel then pops out from behind her, incredulous at the query.

‘Are puppies okay? Is a shooting star okay? Is the laughter of a small child okay?’ he asks. ‘Pepsi is more than okay!’

Hoping to prove his point, Carrel calls on rapper Lil Jon’ to unleash his trademark ‘Okaaaaaay!’ before Cardi B suddenly appears to the tune of her hit I Like It.

STELLA ARTOIS

Stella Artois called on two big names – and a little nostalgia – for its Super Bowl commercial.

The ad begins with Sarah Jessica Parker sitting down at a restaurant. The waiter asks if she wants a Cosmopolitan, the drink she made famous as Carrie Bradshaw in Sex And The City.

‘Nope. Tonight I’ll have a Stella Artois,’ she replies.

The shocked restaurant descends into chaos before the Stella arrives at Gellar’s table, but the surprises aren’t over.

Then Jeff Bridges, reprising his role as the Dude from The Big Lebowski, saunters in and also turns down his beloved White Russian.

As they sip on their beers, Parker turns to Bridges and tells him ‘Good choice’.

‘Well, changing can do a little good,’ he replies before unleashing his famous phrase ‘Dude abides’.

OLAY

Many will continue to wonder if they’ve been transported back to the nineties after seeing Olay’s commercial, which features Sarah Michelle Gellar.

The Buffy the Vampire star is seen running away from a masked intruder, but can’t unlock her phone to call for help because it doesn’t recognize her face.

‘I’ve been using Olay! It has totally transformed my skin,’ she tells her friend.

The masked man finally breaks in, and even he can’t ignore Gellar’s complexion.

‘Your skin’s glowing, you could be a movie star,’ he tells her.

And while the masked man is never unveiled, IMDB reveals that the role was actually played by Gellar’s husband – and fellow nineties heartthrob – Freddie Prinze Jr.

DORTIOS

Dortios also added a dose of nostalgia to promote its new Flamin’ Hot Nacho chips.

The ad begins with Chance the Rapper taking a bite of one of the chips and asking ‘They made the original hot?’

Chance is then suddenly dancing in front of a purple plane, spitting a few bars as he also dances in front of a purple car, and there’s even a purple fog machine.

And, if that wasn’t enough, suddenly the Backstreet Boys appear out of nowhere and its revealed the commercial is actually a spoof of their 1999 music video for I Want It That Way.

Dressed in their signature all-white outfits from the video, the Backstreet Boys and Chance begin to perform the tune – complete with the same dance moves.

EXPENSIFY

Expensify similarly called on the star power of a famous rapper to help tout its app for expense management and receipt scanning.

The commercial shows 2 Chainz filming an extravagant music video, complete with a car made out of ice, dancing girls, and seafood towers.

But just as he’s getting into his flow, he’s interrupted by actor Adam Scott – who warns him that he’ll need paper receipts for everything in the video.

‘Nah, I have Expensify for that,’ 2 Chainz confidently replies.

BUBLY

Michael Buble was the perfect choice to promote Bubly, Pepsi’s version of sparkling water.

The famous crooner struggles to get the pronunciation of the drink right, convinced it must be the same as his last name.

‘You mean Bubly?’ a woman nearby replies. ‘You’re Michael Buble. That’s a Bubly.’

A little girl then walks up to Buble and asks, ‘Can I have your autograph Mr Bubbly?’

‘It’s Buble,’ he tells her before trying to change all the cans to spell out his last name with a Sharpie.

BUMBLE

Bumble skipped the jokes and went for an empowering message to promote its app, which gives women the power to initiate conversations with their matches.

The company tapped Serena Williams to star and act as co-creative director in its new campaign, titled The Ball Is In Her Court.

‘We’re living in a world and society where people are starting to understand we’re just as strong and just as smart and just as savvy and just as business-like as any male in this world,’ she says in the commercial.

‘And we always have been. Now it’s time to really show up and tell our story the way it should be told.’

M&M’s

Christina Applegate is a frustrated mom in M&M’s Super Bowl ad to promote its new chocolate bars.

The commercial shows Applegate trying to stay focused on the road as three M&M’s argue and scream in the back like rowdy children on a road trip.

‘If you don’t stop I will eat all of you right now,’ she says, turning around to yell at them.

‘I prefer the break us apart option,’ one of them replies.

HYUNDAI

Jason Bateman was on hand to make fun of the pain of car shopping – as well as eating with vegans.

The Arrested Development star plays an elevator attendant in Hyundai’s Super Bowl commercial, except this elevator takes people through uncomfortable situations.

There’s root canals, jury duty, sitting on the middle seat of a plane, having the talk about sex with your parents, and that vegan dinner party.

When the elevator finally reaches car shopping, a couple tells Bateman they’re actually getting a Hyundai.

‘Going up,’ he replies, taking them to a room full of soothing music and huge windows showing bright blue skies.

SKECHERS

Tony Romo may have never made it to a Super Bowl, but the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback did get to star in his own ad for the big game.

For Skechers’ new commercial, Romo revealed that he likes to ‘make my life easy’.

He shows off a home filled with gadgets, including a robot that picks up his popcorn crumbs, a machine that plays fetch with his dogs, and a floating tray that delivers his drinks.

Romo then slips on a pair of Skechers slippers, saying they’re ‘for those who like things easy’.

PLANTERS

Planters wanted to remind football fans that peanuts were a worthy snack on Super Bowl Sunday.

The ad shows the famous Planters mascot Mr Peanut manically driving his peanut van through busy streets.

At one point he passes by Charlie Sheen, who remarks: ‘And people think I’m nuts’.

It is then revealed that Mr Peanut has been speeding to reach Alex Rodriguez, who is about to reach for a bag of kale chips.

Mr Peanut knocks the healthy chips aside for a tin of salty mixed nuts instead.

‘Always there in crunch time,’ a voice says as Mr Peanut winks at Rodriguez, who gives him a thumbs up.

BUDWEISER

Budweiser was one of the few big names to bypass star power, using an adorable puppy instead.

The beer company has long relied on the adorableness of dogs to help sell its beer, and this year was no different.

Budweiser’s commercial begins with a Dalmatian happily feeling the wind on his face, the sun shining behind him, as Bob Dylan’s famous tune Blownin’ In The Wind plays in the background.

The camera then pans back to show the Dalmatian is on a horse-drawn carriage full of Budweiser beer.

We then see rows upon rows of wind turbines, promoting the fact that the company now uses wind power.

‘Now brewed with wind power for a better tomorrow,’ the socially-conscious ad declares at the end.

COCA-COLA

Coca-Cola also wanted to create an ad that came with a powerful message, promoting unity in these politically-charged times.

The animated ad shows a flurry of characters – which were inspired by an Andy Warhol cartoon – happily sharing Cokes with each other.

They are of various shapes, colors, sizes, and ages, but their love of drinking coke is still the same.

‘A coke is a coke, it’s the same for everyone,’ a voice reads. ‘You can get one if you want it, no matter where you’re from.’

‘He drinks coke and she drinks coke, even though they disagree. And while the bottles look alike, you aren’t the same as me.’

‘Stars drink it, chefs drink it, farmers want one when its hot. There’s a coke here if you’re thirsty, but that’s cool if you’re not.’

‘We all have different hearts and hands, don’t you see? Difference is beautiful – and together is beautiful too.’

MICHELOB ULTRA

Michelob Ultra, which features Colombian singer Maluma, looked to the future to try and promote its light beer on Super Bowl Sunday.

The ad imagines a world where robots walk among humans and, for the most part, outperform us.

They are running faster than us on morning jogs, golfing better than us, and killing it at spin class.

But when one robot passes by a bar, where friends are sharing a few pints together, one major flaw is revealed – they can’t enjoy a beer.

‘It’s only worth it, if you can enjoy it,’ the ad reads.

THE NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE

The National Football League’s Super Bowl commercial featuring its past and current legends is winning near-unanimous applause.

The two-minute ad, which was directed by acclaimed Hollywood filmmaker Peter Berg, includes cameos by a number of the game’s greats, including Peyton Manning, Terry Bradshaw, Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Deion Sanders, Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, and others.

The commercial featured more than 50 active and retired players. It was created to celebrate the NFL’s centennial season, which begins later this year, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

BURGER KING

Burger King may have won the contest for edgiest and most original Super Bowl commercial idea on Sunday thanks to its ad featuring Andy Warhol chowing down on a Whopper.

The fast food chain’s 45-second spot features Warhol, the artist credited for spearheading the pop art movement of the 1960s, quietly feasting on a burger.

Warhol doesn’t make any noise except to briefly express frustration because the ketchup won’t quickly emerge from the Heinz bottle.

‘It doesn’t come out,’ Warhol says in the clip.

PAMPERS

Adam Levine has joined John Legend and his wife Chrissy Teigen to remix Legend’s Stinky Booty Duty song in a new Pampers Super Bowl commercial.

The original Stinky Booty Duty song debuted last June, with Legend, singing to is young daughter Luna while changing her diaper, with a few other dads chiming in.

The remix, dubbed Stinky Booty Duty 2.0, features Legend, 40, changing his eight month old son Miles’ diaper, getting an assist from Luna and some vocal help from several other dads, including Maroon 5 front man Adam Levine.

When Legend takes off Miles’ diaper, he says he’s gonna need some ‘back-up on this one,’ as Luna peels off some Pampers wipes, before turning to a group of random dads who have their kids strapped to them in baby carriers.

Apparently all these dads can hold a tune and harmonize as well, as they start singing the Stinky Booty Duty song, with a surprise appearance from Adam Levine towards the end.
