17 people of various nationalities are killed in Dubai bus crash after vehicle smashes into overhead sign

  • India has confirmed 12 of its nationals died when the tourist bus crashed 
  • The bus was travelling from Oman when it crashed in the United Arab Emirates 
  • At least three were injured in the crash on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road

Seventeen people have been killed after a bus from Oman crashed in the United Arab Emirates, Dubai police have said.

The death toll was announced in tweets published early on Friday.

Police say the bus crashed into a sign on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.

They did not elaborate on what caused the bus driver to hit the sign, but warned that ‘sometimes a minor error or negligence’ can be fatal.

The force said the dead included different nationalities. At least three others were injured in the crash.

On Twitter Dubai Police said the driver, in his fifties, was being treated for moderate injuries at Rashid Hospital. 

General Directorate of Dubai Police extended his condolences to the families of all those who died in a statement on Twitter.  

Mwasalat, a government-owned bus company in Oman, said the crash involving its Muscat-to-Dubai route happened at 6pm local time on Thursday.

It said it would suspend the service for the immediate future.

Gulf News are reporting that twelve Indians have been identified among the dead in the crash that killed a total of 17. 

Consul General of India in Dubai Vipul confirmed the dead with the media outlet on Friday morning.  

He said he’d been to the hospital and police station and the consulate was working with Dubai Police to help the victims’ families with repatriation procedures. 

‘We have been in touch with the families, police and hospital. Our officers will be available on the numbers that we tweeted. One person will be at the Rashidiya Police station and another one in the mortuary to assist the families.’
